I guess I should've asked this too: do you think it's worth it to put frame saver in an older frame that's already showing surface rust and paint flaking in spots? Stupid Trek and their stupid half-assed internal cable routing...

+1

My late 80's Trek is flakin' and bubblin' mighty bad. Didn't wipe it down enough after all the sweat I poured over it.

Scrodzilla 12-27-12 09:29 PM

Frame Saver helps to prevent new rust from forming kn the inside of a frame, it doesn't magically stop existing rust.

Mr Scrod,
I'm looking for a quill stem with a removable top section for changing out bars easily like what Sheldon's page describes as a "Pop-top" stem. Do you know anyone that makes something like this?

bfuser259387 12-28-12 07:34 AM

So I've been poking around the internet and I'm not able to find any quill stems with a removable face plate that don't look like industrial mountain bike stems. :(

Scrodzilla 12-28-12 08:50 AM

The stock quill stem that comes on a Fuji Feather has a removable faceplate and looks like this:

I know it's a knockoff of another existing stem but can't recall what it is.

Also, there's the 3T Motus:

Nitto UI quill stems have removable face plates. Some older Ritchey (Nitto made) and Salsa stems do as well. All are Cro-Mo.

ddeadserious 12-28-12 09:55 AM

Dimension makes one as well, 26.0 clamp.

jpsawyer 12-28-12 10:17 AM

The deda murex has a removable faceplate. Or you can look for older profile design stems. The cinelli frog is another one. But most of these are pretty ugly in my opinion.

If you guys read his post, he says he's looking for one that doesn't look like an industrial mountain bike stem.

ddeadserious 12-28-12 10:42 AM

Yes. Dimension makes one that looks like this, but with the Dimension D logo on the side. I'm sure it's the same stem that comes on the Fuji Feather.

Edit: Nevermind, I'm drunk today. You can see the stem he has here, which does have kind of an industrial MTB look.

Scrodzilla 12-28-12 10:51 AM

QBP (manufacturer of Dimension-branded parts) shows no trace of that stem existing.

ddeadserious 12-28-12 10:54 AM

Yeah I was just trying to find it and couldn't. I posted a link to his PR in my edit above. The stem looks exactly like the Profile Design one, but it is branded Dimension(and is polished rather than black powdercoat), even though I can't find it on QBP either. He got it a year or so ago.

FakeFuji 12-28-12 12:18 PM

I thought leader made one too

Scrodzilla 12-28-12 12:23 PM

Jeez. Apparently they do (or did):

http://coghouse.com/leaderquillstem.aspx

It's not in their current catalog so it may be old stock.

Kayce 12-28-12 12:28 PM

Bike Works in Philly got a huge gift from Fuji a few years ago that look exactly like theDimension stem powder coated black, but branded Fuji. Usually stuff like that from Fuji means they were no longer on the market.

bfuser259387 12-29-12 04:57 AM

Wow thank you all so much for the input!
I love the clean simple look of old quill stems but the biggest drawback is the fact that most quill stems make it a half hour long process to change out bars, unless you've got stems for each bar.

I found this one on the eBay that I think may be a close match to the Fuji one mentioned here.

The leader one also looks like a nice option. Ill post pics if I settle on one of these!

8bits 12-29-12 06:12 AM

There's a promotion at planet x of stems for 15% off, they have some models there with removable faceplates, you can buy it next to nothing

jpsawyer 12-29-12 11:01 AM

Im pretty sure the Leader stems were just rebranded Deda stems

Scrodzilla 12-29-12 11:08 AM

On the contrary, they were rebranded generic stems like the one found on the Fuji Feather.

Like so:

Scrod! Whats up man?

hamfoh 12-29-12 07:17 PM

any advantage of the tb14 over archetype? lower profile but heavier, same width. just an aesthetics thing?

Scrodzilla 12-29-12 07:43 PM

I would think the Archetype is a little stiffer, as a rim with even a slightly aero profile will typically be more rigid than a box-section rim.

jlafitte 12-30-12 06:54 AM

Hey Scrod

That Big Block frame you're stocking ("sir elton"), will that be offered as a complete?

Scrodzilla 12-30-12 08:17 AM

No. The 2013 frameset is only available in lavender and the complete is only available in gold.

Oh, and read the first post in this thread.

Oops! Following up over at the marketplace.

Dabbling Runner 12-30-12 07:43 PM

I want an opinion about my 2010 Schwinn Madison. I just got it for $200 in great shape. I want to ride single speed with front and rear brakes (not ready to ride fixed) with bullhorns and use cross top levers (Dirty Harry's). Is this efficient or should I go with the bar end levers? Also, what's the best set of bars for this bike? The guy I bought it from used mountain bike bars. Will bullhorns be less stable?

I'm a newb so if I said something stupid...

Oooo, I've just watched that video. Can we claim he said something stupid and inflict said punishment? :D

Almighty Scrodzilla might I have some help with this huge decision I'm about to make? I currently have a TT Pro that I love. Ohio doesn't have the best of weather so I need a foul weather bike. Should I scrap together an old steel roadie and keep the Kilo as my "nice" bike or turn the kilo into my foul weather and build up a Pake 75 as my NICE bike? Either way it'll be a "shut up and take my money!" situation. Happy New Years and cheers!

The Kilo (with it's lack of clearance for fenders or bigger tires) isn't going to make a very good bad weather bike. I say find an old road bike, use whatever existing parts you can and and throw some used/cheap parts at it to finish it off. My scrap-heap Raleigh is a blessing.
