aside from industry standard changing way back, the debate on weight savings, ability to mount gear, etc...

do they exist for the sole purpose of the vintage and history? they seem to be more common in track bikes

was curious if there was some history or something i was missing

You have an entire internet at your fingertips.

frame all city thunderdome
trying to model mine after your build :)
Q. If possible please explain bottom bracket / crankset that you used.
I think yo used Phil Wood outboard bearing GXP. Did you use just a Sugino 75 spindle or COMPLETE BB-SG 75 set? Sorry for asking a simple question but i never assembled anything like this before. Thank you for help.
I am looking for Phil Wood part that you used for bottom bracket. Thank you again

Scrodzilla 06-25-15 08:21 AM

It is not possible to use an outboard bearing BB with Sugino 75s. I'm using a Phil Wood square taper BB w/ 108mm ISO spindle.

magomaev 06-25-15 10:10 AM

thank you. For some reason Phil Wood square taper BB w/ 108mm ISO spindle is not that easy to buy online. hmmm :(

Scrodzilla 06-25-15 10:16 AM

My shop has them in stock at all times. Send us an e-mail if you want to buy one.

magomaev 06-27-15 08:39 AM

Hello Scrod.
Phil Wood high flange rear hub listed on retro.
Q. is it possible to install freewheel?
Q. General question If the rear hub is listed as fixed would it be possible to have freewheel?
thank you for your help.

Scrodzilla 06-27-15 08:51 AM

Yes, you can safely install a freewheel on any hub having fixed threading.

Start hanging out a bit, explain that you want to learn how to work on bikes and ask for an internship. Chances are you'll be the guy who fixes flats and takes out the garbage for a while but if the shop is cool and you're into learning things, you'll gain some experience and maybe even make a bit of money.

Sure, you can go to school and become certified - which may help you land a job at shops where it's a requirement - but I know more than a few techs who have completed school and like to talk a good game but are total idiots when it comes to actually working on bicycles.

Oh boy o boy o boy o boy!...is this ever true!!!!!!

I know there's a seeming hatred towards the Thickslick, but i've been pleased with the two i've owned. Only concern is how sluggish they feel. My lbs just so happens to have a 700x25 folding version with the red lettering on sale and i was wondering if the reduced weight would help to improve upon the tire's lackluster rolling abilities.

magomaev 06-29-15 12:18 AM

Hi Scrod.
For All City Cecil Pro what size All City Crayton Double clips I need? Medium or Large?
Do you have All City Cecil Pro pedals?
Thank you.

heymatthew 06-29-15 07:01 AM

Hey Scrod,
Do you have any miles on the Fyxation Curve Saddle? I know you're running a Turbo on your Thunderdome and they seem to be fairly similar in style. I'm looking for a white saddle for my bike and the Fyxation comes up time and time again in my searches. I know RG carries them so I didn't know if you'd used one or not. Seems the white Turbos command a bit of a premium via the auction site, but the Curve looks to be an interesting, much less expensive option.

Thoughts on the Curve?

Also, on the Cane Creek brake levers, are the Tan Hoods fairly similar to the tan used on gumwall tires? A lot of the images online make them look pretty dark. I know I'm being superficial and stupid, but... well, colors, man. :)

Best,
Matthew

A little. It's still a really sticky tire though.

This depends on the size of your foot, which I do not know.

I've only ridden on a Curve saddle during a test ride after working on a customer's bike but it seemed pretty comfortable. Same general shape as a Turbo but with a little more padding.

The CC gum hoods are a little darker than The sidewalls on Paellas but not as dark as some pics online suggest. This is pretty accurate:

1. Thanks for the information and for seeking out an image... Looks like the Fyxation will be the one for me, for now...
2. Thanks for not totally ragging on me for being all picky about colors.

By any chance do you have All City Cecil Pro pedals? I would love to buy them? Thank you

E-mail the shop. I don't work 24/7.

to add to the above: these are mine with both tires and hoods about 3 years old

http://www.pedalroom.com/p/trek-400-22589_6.jpg

i think they match pretty perfectly

also when theyre actually on the bike, they would never be close enough to each other for you to notice the slight difference

Scrodzilla 06-29-15 11:39 AM

I should have said the gum color doesn't match the sidewalls on new Pasellas (which do darken up over time).

:)

Mumonkan 06-29-15 11:54 AM

you said paella tho and now i want some.

Thought exactly the same here

Scrodzilla 06-29-15 10:48 PM

Yeah, I guess I did. Ha!

heymatthew 06-30-15 01:44 PM

Not a question... Just wanted to thank you for the recommendation on the IRD Defiant Crankset. I haven't installed it yet, but it's a damn nice component. Heavy, solid, tight. Just a killer piece with a bit of a vintage feel which is exactly what I was going for. Super cool item, man. Thanks!!!

Hey Scrod,

I currently have a non-Italian Gara with the full-carbon Dodici fork. I'm considering a Vigorelli as a possible replacement - the geometries look similar (from what little I can tell from Dodici's site), but what do you think about build quality, etc... between them?

Thanks!

ThermionicScott 06-30-15 02:36 PM

TIL: what paella is, and now I want some too.

From the few Chinese-made Gara frames I've seen in person, they're not anything overly spectacular. A Vig will be much nicer, stiffer and lighter.
