Not a question... Just wanted to thank you for the recommendation on the IRD Defiant Crankset. I haven't installed it yet, but it's a damn nice component. Heavy, solid, tight. Just a killer piece with a bit of a vintage feel which is exactly what I was going for. Super cool item, man. Thanks!!!

Right on. While it's not exactly a "heavy" crankset, I know what you mean in that it is definitely a solid, well made component.

Oh yeah... Didn't mean that it was heavy. Just meant that it felt like it's made really, really well. And it is.

Hello Scrod,
for h+son archetype rims do i need a rim tape or veloplugs? Or should i use both?.
Thank you

Scrodzilla 07-02-15 04:31 PM

Veloplugs are dumb. I always use 16mm Velox tape on Archetypes.

magomaev 07-02-15 04:34 PM

thank you so much...

any experience with bike hub store hubs? comparable quality to novatec?

Scrodzilla 07-02-15 08:56 PM

The road hubs are so similar that I used to think they were the same. I don't think they are but they're very nice.

RG has an account with Bike Hub Store so if you've got your heart set on something...

carmavore 07-02-15 09:39 PM

Are you still selling your macho man?

Scrodzilla 07-02-15 10:14 PM

Yup. Wanna buy it?

My thunderdome frame is used. I would like to clean bottom bracket shell. It has some grease from the previous installation.
Q. What type of cleaner do you use to clean bottom bracket shell/threads.
Q. it is my understanding that when installing Phil Wood bottom bracket no grease is needed and instead you should use thread locking compound provided? Please confirm.
Thank you for your help.

Scrodzilla 07-07-15 09:32 AM

It's not rocket science. Just wipe out the shell with a rag. If you're 100% set on removing every bit of grease, literally any degreaser will work.

I always use grease or anti-seize on bottom brackets.

FPC 07-07-15 06:46 PM

whats the best/easiest way of removing rust from the inside a steel frame?

Scrodzilla 07-07-15 06:54 PM

Riding your bike and not worrying about it.

Nagrom_ 07-07-15 10:46 PM

Hey Scrod, I wanted to share my 10,000th post with you.

Hows the bones be?

Scrodzilla 07-07-15 11:02 PM

I'm still in some pain but it's getting a little better. The doc also discovered a fractured scapula during a recent follow up x-ray so yeah...in addition to the broken/separated clavicle and fractured ribs, there's that.

Nagrom_ 07-07-15 11:05 PM

That sucks, whats the estimated recovery length?

Scrodzilla 07-07-15 11:20 PM

I have no idea. Doc originally said 6-8 weeks. It's been a little over 4 weeks now.

Any experience with Lucas bearing grease (xtra heavy duty, I believe)? I've been using Phil Wood Waterproof Grease since forever (late 80's maybe?) and swear they come from the same bucket. I don't need to lube bearings a lot, but my wife's been riding quite a bit more (100 miles/week) and I'm hoping she don't literally ride the wheels off, so it's time for some maintenance.

Unkle Rico 07-08-15 11:41 AM

Any recommendations for an 18h rim? I want to rebuild a set of HED's I recently picked up, rims are basically toast but the hubs are still good

This is the answer for TONS of silly questions on here.

heymatthew 07-09-15 06:42 PM

Hey Scrod,
i installed my IRD defiant crankset tonight and on the NDS, I can tighten it way down with no problem, but on the drive side, it bottoms out against the bracket if I really torque it down. Do I have the wrong BB? All I know is that my BB is square taper but I don't have the exact specs. I can tighten it down a good ways before it bottoms out, but I'm worried that not cranking it down will result in it coming loose while I'm riding.

Any my info would be great.

Best,
matthew

Scrodzilla 07-09-15 06:46 PM

It sounds like your spindle is too short. Regardless of what brand BB you use, you need one having a symmetrical 110mm JIS spindle with that crankset.
