Second opinion on facing the top and bottom of a headtube in order to get a threadless fork with a slightly too short a steerer tube to work?

Nagrom_ 08-14-16 11:39 PM

Crazy huh

Scrodzilla 08-15-16 08:58 AM

How much of the head tube do you plan on taking off?

If you can, take it from the top. I did it on an old Scwhinn for the same reason. I needed a few more threads to engage so I took off ~3mms total. A tiny bit from the bottom and a little more from the top. As long as you aren't hitting the welds, lugs, brazing you should be OK.

That didn't end up mashing your bearings too tight?

:foo: Why would a revised head tube length affect bearing adjustability?

himespau 08-15-16 11:40 AM

I don't know. Must have been a low blood sugar moment - lunch break is very late today. For some reason, I was thinking something about cutting down the cup on the headtube would make the headset races smash closer as if tightening or loosening the threaded race/locknut doesn''t have an impact. Caffeine is making that seem more stupid even as I type it.

Scrodzilla 08-15-16 12:32 PM

Yeah, that makes no sense!

Like Squidward said, as long as he doesn't cut into the welds and stuff, he'll be alright.

Nagrom_ 08-15-16 01:40 PM

Sweet, thanks guys. Gonna take 1mm max off the bottom, and maybe 2.5 off the top. Already have the lowest stack headset/stem I could find too haha.

TB14 question.

H Plus Son's site says they are available in "Grey Ano" and separately lists "Hard Ano". Different prices so I am assuming there is a difference.

Your site lists "Hard Grey Ano".

Have you seen the two different finishes? Is one more greyish or one more silverish?

AristoNYC 08-18-16 01:35 PM

What did you do for your birthday?

GENESTARWIND 08-21-16 06:35 PM

Hotdog with chili and cheese or just one.

I ave no idea. The only grey H+Son rims available in the US are hard anodized.

Nothing too crazy (which is exactly what I wanted). Dinner with Angie and then called in our backyard around the fire pit with a couple of friends.

I can't even remember the last time I ate a hotdog.

Is there a brake track on the front wheel of this set?

Scrodzilla 08-22-16 08:36 AM

You can use brakes on Archetypes, which are anodized after machining.

Thanks. Will it eventually turn silver or will that anodizing stay black?

The braking surface on my SL42's turned silver after a day or 3. But apparently you can buy brakepads that prevent that from happening. Can't remember what they're called though...

Thanks for the information. I like her bike.

I've heard the ano will come off a lot quicker if you ride and brake in the rain. Just a thought.

This is true.

GENESTARWIND 08-25-16 10:32 PM

Why do people argue about burritos and tacos on here so much or pretend they know authentic or why rice can't go in a burrito

Scrodzilla 08-26-16 09:50 AM

For the same reason you took the time to ask that question. Nothing better to do.

It's just four easy payments of $19.95, plus shipping and handling.

You don't.

Roadie wheel build question for ya. I recently bought a powertap GS 24 hole hub. I want to lace it to my Reynolds assault slg hoop which is also 24 hole. One shop said they would not want to do it because my Reynolds is a system rim (with exposed nips) and the ptap hub is a straight pull. The other shop didn't bat an eye and said it would be perfectly fine. How do you weigh in?
