No, that's a hub lockring. You'll want a bottom bracket lockring.

Most cartridge bottom brackets stick out just like that on the NDS. It's really not a big deal.

First post, and I'm hoping to kick things off with something less than entirely stupid. I'm looking to buy new pedals because the stock Kilo pedals are extremely difficult to flip unless I'm wearing my old Vans. I just bought some Chrome shoes I found on sale, and I love them, but it is shockingly difficult to flip the pedals with them. Like, wanted to set the shoes on fire when I got home difficult.

Is there a particular pedal you'd recommend that's relatively easy to flip with shoes that don't have super grippy soles? Looking at the MKS Sylvan Track because it looks like there's a lot of texture on them to grab onto. Thoughts?

You're probably going to hate the Sylvans. Go with either the MKS GR-9 or GR-10, depending on the size of your foot (GR-9 for size 9 and under, GR-10 for 10+)

Or the MKS "Urban Platform." The big, wide tab makes it easy to flip the pedal up.



I have some Lyotard mod. 23 pedals (the inspiration for the Urban Platform) on one of my fixed gear bikes, and they do make it easy.

Actually, I have a harder time flipping those than my GR-10s because they tend to hang too far upside-down with clips and double straps installed.

I have a question concerning what looks like rust: Should I be concerned about this, is there anything I should be doing, is it even rust?

Yes, it's rust. Is it ugly? Yeah, a little. Should you be concerned with it? Probably not.

Surface rust will wipe right off with WD40, which will also help prevent new rust from forming. The rust inside your frame isn't going anywhere and is the same rust living inside everyone's steel bike.

And why is there no grease in your seat tube?

I have a whole big can of WD-40. I ain't concerned with ugly, I'm just concerned with structural integrity. There's no grease in there because of the previous owner didn't put any there...I just got the bike wednesday and I haven't been home for the past two days to do it. Thank you for the quick reply!

Just a public service announcement:

WD-40 =\= grease.

wd40 is awesome for degreasing, cleaning, coating the inside of your frame, etc. but when you regrease things like bearings use actual grease.

Hey Scrod, utterly stupid question. Do you know of anyone who has taken a copper bell (like the Crane Suzue) and put vinegar or whatever on it to make it turn green? If so, did it change the sound? Just curious because I like the look of the green copper, but also think my bell sounds pretty.

I don't personally know anyone who has done it but I've seen a few pics of them. I'm really not sure if it would change the sound but I'm leaning toward no. The color doesn't change the type of metal the bell is made of.

My VO brass bell is super dark brown at this point and it doesn't sound any different than it did when it was new.

It takes a lot of corrosion to change the acoustic properties of a bell. When the surface gets roughed up, the waveform it produces will be less curvy and more angular. Compare samples of a sine waveform and triangle waveform to hear the difference: Non-sinusoidal waveform

When corrosion starts flaking off, that changes the bell's size/shape and will affect things like pitch, duration, overtones.

Actually there are percussionists who treat their cymbals to brine, sandpaper, hammers, burying in their backyard, you name it. A pure sine wave is aesthetically not at all interesting.

What type/grade steel is the frame?
Size L what is the actual frame size?
Retro mentions that "seat binder bolt included" Is that advantage or disadvantage vs using seat collar?
Comparing to all city thunderdome do you think the price for look is justified?
What do you think about the ride?

I've never had a problem with an integrated seat binder on a steel frame.

Both the Thunderdome and the AC 364 are very nice but they're different bikes made from different metal. I haven't really ridden the Look much because I'm still nursing some broken bones but from what I can tell from cruising around the neighborhood, the Look rides like a nice steel frame.
