When you start with all the spokes loose, do you try to get rid of the hump first thing, or later, after it's true with some tension?

Glad you're ok man. This morning dude getting dropped off (in traffic lane) did his best to door me but he left just enough room to squeeze through. HA

Are you trying to get rid of it without detensioning all the spokes?

i was trying to avoid that but obviously it doesnt work

I really need to clean my bike. I meant to clean it before RAGBRAI, I didn't, rode RAGBRAI, put CX tires on, rode dirt/mud, still haven't cleaned it (I cleaned my chain and gears, but nothing else.)

I'm in the "Fix radial flaws right out of the gate" camp.

+1
Get the big ones fixed early

Mumonkan 08-03-15 01:16 PM

i completely de tensioned the wheel 3x and it keeps coming back at the same spot by the seam. i give up, i cant notice it while riding anyway

Azekii 08-03-15 02:26 PM

Put on new pedals with straps and had a fixed gear installed for very cheap. First time riding fixed, I like it. Besides trying to coast and getting slung forward, fun!

There's only 2 camps.

The other is the "not gonna fix a radial hop" camp.

I know a guy who is an excellent builder and he waits until near the very end. He's says, "that way I don't have to keep messing with them over and over." And he gets rid of them every time. I don't know how, but he does.

I've had a couple of wheels where you just couldn't get rid of a little runout by the seam.

I did my lunch ride today on the fixed gear (42/18t), channeling my inner Mikey. I've been neglecting this thing big time since I start riding with the powertap a year ago. It's a nice, different feel - I dig it.

I like how the fixed gear (relative to SS) really makes you feel the features of the road more. Minute changes in direction (orientation WRT wind), gradient, road surface and momentum are really amplified.

I tried it once, but I couldn't get the solder to stick to the cable and slid right off. I just used regular crimps.
