Single track on cross bikes is so much fun, one of the main reasons I want to upgrade my cross bike to disc is just for that. Wet cantis aren't very fun on steep descents.

Neither is a 73 degree head angle  . It is super fun. Fortunately moisture hasn't been a problem and I've managed to keep it rubber side up, so far. I definitely get some "wtf" looks from other riders though.

Really good show on NPR called Snap Judgement.

Snap Judgment

The host Glynn Washington is excellent.

I love steep HTs though, one of the main issues I've been having with newer cross bikes is the are all relaxing the geo for gravel grinding bros.

Been taking the Steamroller out on trails brakeless with a street ratio, I avoid real single track but still have a blast doing dumb things.

riding the wrong bike on singletrack builds good skills, like line choice and learning how to fall

i rode my local trails on a straight up road bike and track bikes with slick tires for 2 years, pretty sure that gave me quite a leg-up once i got a real mtb

Looking far enough down the trail and trusting your body will adjust when you get there is a surreal feeling.

left this morning to get my car at my parents house before work, and drive it back down. There was a killer headwind which extended the ride by nearly 20min. I was already cutting it close so I really pushed the pace to minimize how late I was. Ended up with 240w AP, not bad for nearly 2hrs of riding at 150lbs. NP is a bit higher for sure, haven't checked it yet. also, I was only late by 15 min, not too bad.

Mumonkan 03-22-16 01:36 PM

and on that note: i felt the need to do intervals omw to work this morning.

2x 1min full gas with 30sec active recovery inbetween, rest for 2 mins while the light changes, then another min full gas, rest for 30 sec, 2 mins full gas, active recovery the rest of the way in

Finals week :(
I just want to ride bikes, man. I'm still up in the air about whether or not I want to do the Berkeley Crit Easter sunday or go on a group ride with a bunch of friends. Pre-reg closes thursday, so I basically have until then to decide.

ouch!

those intervals after the 30s (incomplete) recovery are super good for you, and super tough.

PedalingWalrus 03-22-16 02:26 PM

got up to commute to work. Checked my tires. A bit soft. Tried to pump them up. Pump plastic fitting at the base finally gave up after 5 years of service. Ok. Took my compressed air cartridge and filled both tires. Rode to work, wind and all. Got out of work. Front tire is flat. Now I don't have a cartridge and my pump is broken. :-) So I sent a text message and waiting until my teenage son checks his phone.

i couldve maybe done one more set of 2x1's, the 2 mins hurt pretty good and i was running out of road lol

kindof thinking of doin lunchervals on the running track on campus a couple days a week, but its got that rubbery surface so just moving requires like 50watts more effort

Nagrom_ 03-22-16 02:48 PM

I woulda already been to work half way through that.

I dunno if it's like this everywhere, but they are suuuuuuper anti cycling on the running tracks here, and I guess that makes sense. I learned this the hard way very quickly... who knew angry runners can yell even louder than angry drivers.

Too funny. People tell me my 1.9" tires are too skinny and do not have enough tread.....

Yep, track is hallowed ground to runners. They consider it sacrilege to ride a bike on it.

You'd be better off riding on a golf course, and that ain't saying much. I tried to run on the golf cart trails once. Those guys are viscous.

Nagrom_ 03-22-16 05:51 PM

I'd imagine I'd yell pretty loudly at a jogger on the 'drome tho.

LOL. Must be different everywhere. I ride on a couple private courses here (and I aint a member) and so far I've been OK. I try to demonstrate good etiquette and a "golf course" demeanor though. I ride slow and quiet and stop when people are driving off the tees or putting. There are even signs posted that read "No biking or skating on cart paths." :innocent:

I'm really considering building my carbon BMC road frame as a fixed gear with an eccentric rear hub. Can't think of a good reason not to and the frame is just sitting in my closet. By my calculations the build would come out to 12.5 lbs :D
