Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

This isn't true though. The only difference between machined and non-machined Deep Vs, Aeroheads, Fusions, A23s, etc. rims (for example) is the non-machined version has the finish removed on the brake surface. Structurally, they are exactly the same. H+Son SL42s have machined surfaces which are anodized after machining.

Rims with a true V profile - like B43s and H+Son Formation Faces (which do not have a parallel braking surface) - are not structurally designed to withstand brake wear.

Fwiw i ride on 32h 2x a23s, im 165 lbs and i carry 30 pounds of **** on me for 22 miles a day on a warzone of roads that im sure are similar to yours

After around 1200 miles my front wheel only needed truing once, the real problem is flats and that will happen regardless of your rim choice

unless youre getting a 12h radial carbon wheel youll be fine, but a heavy rim will make your life a little more difficult

Building the wheel properly is more important than the choice of rim. As long as the rim wasn't designed as a pure racing or track rim and is of good quality, it'll be plenty strong enough for urban use ... as long as the wheel is built properly.

Fair enough, it was the latter case I was thinking of.
