Weather.com says Mt. Wilson will have 20-22 mph winds tomorrow and less than 60 degrees until noon. Anybody thinking of an alternate route? I'd love to do Angeles Crest, but it looks like tomorrow will not be ideal. What do you guys think?

big john 11-02-07 10:13 PM

Don't worry, be happy.

I'm going to translate that as "don't be a wuss. Do Angeles Crest anyway." But I would like to know if anyone is doing it, because I don't want to wait at Foothill and Alta Canyada for a half hour wondering if anyone is coming.

I'm meeting a couple of riders at the Shell Station at Foothill and the 2 at 8:30, come with us.

This is one of those times I'm just not sure. I'm not going to CSUN, so I don't know if anyone is coming from there, but there was talk of it last week.
Vertical Bob is coming from Glendale, that's pretty sure, and a group of women is supposed to be starting over there and heading to Newcaomb's.
As for me, I'll start from home and if I feel O.K., I plan to climb to at least Clear Creek, if not the whole thing. If my back starts hurting, I'll be heading home.

Shprung 11-03-07 01:33 PM

Lots of people came, but no one (I know of) end up going north.
We went down to the city and did ride level #4 (ride no 531).
You can see few photos in the route map page.

Here is a snap shoot of the start..

I went up Angeles Crest and it was beautiful. A little wind in spots, but it was never a problem. I didn't see Bob or Brian, but I rode with a group containing Leah and Christy. My back hurt a little, so I turned at Clear Creek and went down Big T.

vertical bob 11-03-07 05:38 PM

Laura, Renee and I rode AC to Newcombs as planned and did Mt. Wilson on the way back. 8700 ft in 75 miles. The wind wasn't an issue as AC is sheltered. It was a nice day up there. Never saw the Bike John's group, no big surprise there.

big john 11-03-07 08:28 PM

Bob, the guys at the Shell station told me I had missed you by a few minutes. I wouldn't have been up for Newcomb's anyway, but it would have been nice to see Laura and Renee. Bicycle John's group was supposed to go to Newcomb's, maybe they turned back at Red Box, instead.

urbanknight 11-04-07 12:06 AM

I didn't wake up early enough to meet you at 8:30, but I waited from 9:15 until about 9:40 when I decided none of the SFVBC guys weren't coming, so I went alone. I made it up to Red Box just fine, but shortly after turning onto Upper Big T, my thighs decided they were through and every short incline after that was like murder. I felt a little better when I passed someone from a group ride (i.martin and LaGrange jerseys) who was doing worse than I was. Then I realized I hadn't replaced my emergency cash from the tube I bought a week ago, so I couldn't buy any water at the cafe. Special thanks to Vedugo Little League Field for providing much needed water at the bottom of Big Tujunga. I dragged myself the rest of the way home.

It was a beautiful ride. There was very little wind to speak of and I didn't even end up using my wind shell because it was a comfy temperature even at the top. I'll be cutting this route short at Angeles Forest Highway until I build up some better legs, though.

Nice photos, as always, Shai. Looks like you had a great group. I don't think I've ever been on those canyon roads into Bev Hills -- how are they for riding (traffic, shoulder, etc)?

cuda2k 11-04-07 12:50 PM

What's the pace like for the 1 / 2 rides of 30-45mi? I'll be in town on the 24th and might try to catch one of the SFVBC rides since it looks like the closest group ride to where I'll be staying (Ventura & DeSoto).

zzzwillzzz 11-04-07 04:58 PM

not too fast and the group spreads out pretty quickly to different abilities. on sundays everyone usually does the short route. there's room on the back of my tandem that weekend and my wife has to work

1/2 ride pace is HELLA chill. If you just started cycling you will be able to hang on no problem!

if you've been riding more than 6 months I would recommend the 3ish group. 2 would probably be best for you cuda if you just want to take it slow and just cruise around the urban parts of the valley

ovoleg 11-04-07 05:41 PM

toook pics today, will upload!

cuda2k 11-04-07 06:43 PM

Thanks for the info ovoleg. I just don't want to get in over my head in an area I know nothing about on a bike I'm not fimilar with. I've been off the bike for close to a month with surgery and the flu so I've lost a lot of the conditioning I had at the peak of the riding season here in Texas in late August through September. Today's club ride here in Dallas we did 42mi at a 'recovery' pace of 17mph avg. I can certainly push more, but if I come out there to ride with the SoCal crew I'd rather take it down notch to a social ride. :)

VanceMac 11-04-07 07:11 PM

Cuda, you'd be fine on a 3. And you would be well taken care of on any of those clubs rides. No worries.

ovoleg 11-04-07 07:39 PM

ya you'd be fine on the 3. Come out this saturday.

I think I'm going to just ride around and take pics, so much more enjoyable :)

cuda2k 11-04-07 11:55 PM

I won't be flying in till the 17th. Looks like Saturday the 24th will be the best opportunity to get out for a ride. Need to find a shop (or a kind SoCal BF'er) to loan a bike from. Anyone have a spare 56-58cm bike in the SFV area or suggest a good shop to contact about a rental? Doesn't have to be anything fancy, though STI (or Ergo!) would be preferred over downtube shifters. ;)

I'll look at the 3 ride and see if the milage (and pace?) will get me back when I need to be. No set plans for that day though so hopefully I can get away as long as needed.

zzzwillzzz 11-05-07 11:25 AM

check bicycle john's in burbank. iirc they charge $65 to demo a bike before you buy. any bike they have in stock like moots, look, calfee, pinarello etc.

I like this plan. My wife may not if I come home dreaming of a new Merlin or Pinarello... but that's beside the point.

Anybody planning to ride the #5 ride this Saturday??
It's ride #214 up to Elizabeth Lake.

Could be fun, any takers??

urbanknight 11-07-07 07:27 PM

Looks like a beautiful route. Even the shorter #4 route is beautiful. I've been up in that area to help out for a rally race before. But my legs are telling me I should limit myself to about 60 miles for now (or at least less climbing than AC to Upper Big T) so I'll probably stick with the Agoura Corridor.

I may be interested, although the last time I took an 86 mile ride, it turned out to be 101 miles, we got stuck in truck traffic and I didn't get back until 4:45. I was beat.

If I am remembering correctly from last year, this is a great ride with a big turnout. I will see you there.
