The derailleurs and shifters are not original. It came with Simplex or Huret.

Yeah....neither are the hoods. In fact you should probably just box those up and send them this way my Carlton Super Course would be very greatful :-)

I kid I kid. Very nice looking bike though. I love the color and the bike really shines for being almost 40.

I got a really nice surprise a couple of days ago. Sonatageek sent me a message that he picked up a bike on ebay in my area for the low low price of $0.25. He told me if I wanted to pick it up I could have it, he didn't even ask for the quarter he invested into it. Anyway, I picked it up yesterday and it turned out to be a 1980's Schwinn sprint in pretty excellent condition. Once I finish knocking the dust off it will probably look close to new. This bike will eventually make it's way to craigslist and I will see to it that Sonatageek gets his share in whatever it sells for.

That spot on the saddle is just a rain drop:

Check out the plastic caps on the brakes! The original Suntour Accushift housing is in great condition too.

Nothing fancy here, but this will look great when it's clean:

I passed up on a $0.99 ladies schwinn sprint at a thrift store this summer - i didn't have a way to get it home at the time and was about to move across the country with enough bikes already. it was in much worse condition than yours - rust and needed everything replaced/cleaned.

Yeah, the physical condition of this one is the big redeeming quality. Otherwise I could see passing it up.

This may be a C&V foul, but I snagged this to build the other day. I've been wanting an 853 tubed bike for some time now and considering the very expensive eccentric rear hub it came with & the bargained price, it was a good deal. I haven't found specs that exactly match up the paint or specs on this, but it's a Schwinn Peloton from the late 90s or maybe early '00s, Reynolds 853 tubing & carbon fork (surely, that is a C&V foul, right?)

I had that exact bike and was told that it was a 1999 model so yeah, it is 11 years old now ;)

You will love how it rides. Mine came with the original 9-speed Ultegra group and I think that the only model higher than the Peloton was the Paramount...
or maybe there was a Peloton Pro?

I see no foul. In fact I rather like it.

Of course, you know it's not a real Schwinn.

fiataccompli 01-29-10 10:33 AM

This one was last built as a fixie (true to the term, with a spoke card, profile bars, front brake, and some stickers...but also with the very clever White Industries Eno eccentric hub...so, hey, I can run a 5 speed freewheel on this thing with the wheels it came with! wooohoo!), but I'm gonna be on the lookout for a serious bargain on a 9-speed group for it.

All the others I found info on were solid bue except for the downtube section where the decal is...and most seemed to have an aluminum (why?) fork. This one seems to match the specs i found for the "Peloton Pro" except the PO said it was built with 105....but, then again, who knows? I think the original owner was a factory sponsored racer & sold the bike in 105 gear to the PO, who later stripped it & built it back with the pieces you sorta see in the picture....Other than some chain suck/rub and some paint chips/cable rub here & there it's in great shape.

Of course, you know it's not a real Schwinn.
but, it does make a cool book-end to my 1960 Continental. At least it's still a real bike! :)

I looked around and it seems 853 was only introduced in 1995, so it's a C&V example of 853 :)

Picked this up a few weeks ago. Cramerotti TT funny bike frame, beautiful condition. I don't know what direction I will take the build yet...

Build it up, put on a rack, fenders, and lights, and enter it into Velo Cheapo 2010. ;)

early 70s Rollfast Starlight 3sp with 24 inch wheels

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4049/...e1c9bd42_o.jpg

Picked it up as a donor bike to fix my younger son's Rollfast Bromleigh Sports 24 (pictured below), when I got sick and tired of getting the cold shoulder from local places (including a custom frame maker) about straightening that fork

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2651/...1dae1389_o.jpg

Identical frame, will cannibalize the fork, cable guides, kickstand and maybe the fenders and keep the front wheel for a spare. Then most of the rest (I might sell the rear hub and the 3 sp shifter and the handlebar) will go to my favorite local charity that helps inner city kids fix a bike an keep it. All for much less than the cost of labor to straighten that fork...

I shall need a calculator to determine the vast amount of karma points you will acquire for salvaging that bike from fixiedom. :thumb:

91MF 01-29-10 06:39 PM

picked up this 1987 gardin special today. the F on the fork indicates it was in celebration of campys 50th anniversary. campy dropouts, cinelli lugs, columbus [??? - sticker is torn] tubes.
it is ridiculously light - the lightest 60cm steel frame i've ever held. pantographed top and head tubes. all that said the paint has a lot of damage and i will most likely put shimano brakes/levers on and fixed/ss it. im sure that annoys someone[minus karma points apparently].

Nice one, really nice, ive always kinda liked the looks of those machines

noglider 01-29-10 08:13 PM

I don't know what's wrong with fixifying a bike. I've done it. As I've said, riding fixed isn't a way of life for me, but I enjoy it.

91MF 01-29-10 08:25 PM

@noglider - i think they assume by putting a fixed cog on a bike you must automatically skid through intersections blindly and put a plastic wheel on the front of your bike. i actually have no issue with people riding brakeless - i have done it and will do it again when i build up another track bike. this bike will get brakes and will commute 60kms regularly, switching duties with my other bikes.

fiataccompli 01-29-10 08:34 PM

I think in the case of mine, the PO had somewhat 'demoted' it to the task of being a fixie..and it had the typical trappings I mentioned above. That said, there was nothing irreversable (unless there's some damage i'm not aware of), so no harm no foul. Out of all my bikes, it's probably the last one that I would think of to simplify and run as a SS or FG, but then again I have a lot to choose from. The eccentric rear hub is a neat-o sort of thing. Not sure I'd use it since I have few bikes with vertical rear dropouts, but I'm not sure if I want to sell it (which per my cursory research would probably net me profit enough to buy a hamburger + I'd end up the frame/fork/seatpost/headset/stem and maybe the front wheel or even the rear rim all for free).

Then I beg your pardon.

Just to clarify: I couldn't care less how someone rides their bike. If they want to "look like a drunken circus bear on a tiny bike when they go through an intersection" as I once heard it described, then they're welcome to have at it. I only become disgusted when they take classic frames like Masi and so forth and hack them to pieces in the name of making them look "cleaner" or "simplistic". :notamused: Still...what a person does with his own property is his own business...but if they offer it up on a public forum, I reserve the right to give my opinion. ;) Again...humble apologies, for lumping you in with the masses. :)
