We're trying to get kids in our town to ride to school. In the middle schools, they need written permission from their parents. It is perceived as too dangerous. We're trying to break that perception, with education. "We" are the South Orange/Maplewood Bicycle Coalition, which I co-formed this past fall.

As far as I know there are no restrictions on kids biking to any of our schools. His grade school, and the middle and high schools he will go to if we stay put, are all pretty easily accessable, either on neighborhood streets or with explicit bike lanes (vs where we moved from where the grade school was on its own exit off a divided highway with no other connections).
It's only mildly frustrating at his current school they lock the doors by the bike rack as early as they can but never lock the doors by the parking lot (at the other end) until every last kid is gone (>6pm).

What a load of doo doo! Good to see you breaking that trend.
When I was a kid I rode 2 miles to school when I was 10 and when I was 11 I had a paper route I did BEFORE school in Troy Michigan. Too much coddling is half the problem with this country.

Before I was 5 years old I walked by myself to kindergarten, a few blocks away from home. I also had the freedom to get up, and ride my trike in my pajamas around the block a few times while waiting for the grown-ups to wake up and make breakfast. When I was 9, I had the freedom to get on the transit bus with my friend (or by muself) and ride downtown to haunt all my favorite hobby shops all day Saturday. The whole time I was growing up,I was not missed at home between breakfast and lunch, and between lunch and dinner (or all day, with prior approval, for that matter).

Waddya ride that new junk for? You should be riding your Marathon, like me!

My regular commuter is having wheel problems, so the Marathon is it right now.

I know, I know. I do love my Marathon, don't get me wrong. It's just that the OCR is much smoother and takes me to work and back in 10 minutes less. Besides that, I'm not using it anymore and have put it up for sale... It's a shame to "have to" let it go, but I can use the money and it's standing in my way anyhow.

the latest version of the Surly Cross Check. Put some Geax Barro Race 700x45c and a 40deg power tool stem. I need some Midge bars or Wtb mountain Drops. Also, I am going to put an Ultegra triple crank on. I will mount one of my racks before Monday's commute.

I bought this Schwinn Sierra new in the mid 80's beat the s--t out of it for a few years then hung it up in the corner. I have just started commuting. Yes I thought winter in Illinois would be a good time to start, so I brought it down dressed it up with fenders, rack, lights, etcAnd today it was 8 degrees out with 15 plus mph winds and still going strong it’s a tank
Notice the rear u brake, strong with great stopping power but clogged with mud easy in wet muddy conditions or Biopace chain wheels (https://www.sheldonbrown.com/biopace.html). Remember these when they first came out.
Well here it is

Bikes: 2009 Trek Soho
Here are a couple crummy pictures of my Trek Soho. First, a flash photo that overemphasizes the reflective surfaces:
trek soho.jpg
Main differences from the stock setup are these:
* I replaced the awful grips with Bontrager Satellite Plus, half the price of the Ergon grips. I also picked up a pair of Cane Creek ergonomic bar ends on CL.
* speedometer and lights up front, one to see and one to be seen. two rear lights, one on the seat post and one on the back of the basket.
* I use both the supplied thermos and a standard water bottle. My lunch (usually leftover casserole) goes in the former.
* instead of a saddle bag hanging from the seat I place it on top of the rods connecting the rear rack.
