Here's my bike bumped out to 40mm tires.

Not sure they're keepers but they do fit fine(tm), fenders and all.

Nice pic, but you two really need some panniers, baskets, or a trailer. It's not bad enough she's your stoker but she's gotta carry the bags, too? Shame!

Hello everyone! I'm currently a college student in Boston who rides everywhere. Here's my most used commuter bike, which is a 2004 Fuji Silhouette. Armed with a specialized Avatar to keep my bum happy and Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires for a year and a half so far of flat-free riding in the glass-ridden streets of Boston and New York. The trekking handlebars come in handy for multiple hand positions, and the ergon grips eliminated my wrist pain:

I made homemade panniers out of some old trashcans which I lug stuff around in:

I've also put many years of drum lessons to use recently by spreading public music all around Boston. Strapped to the bars are a bucket, a synthetic woodblock, and a cowbell:

Seeing smiles on peoples' faces while riding to class everyday is a very rewarding experience.

Bikes: Some bikes. Hell, they're all the same, ain't they?

That jam block is louder than any bike bell on the planet. That is, unless someone sells a ship's bell with a handlebar mount. With a good whack, I've had those blocks echo across half a mile.

It's old, it's blue, and on a good day it gets me to the nearest light-rail stop in less than a half-hour.

Ah...she's stronger than she looks. Actually, she couldn't pedal (knees hit the groceries) so I pedaled for both of us. She is actually stronger than she looks, she's a gymnast.

Very sweet... love the fixed mtb's.

Been riding my extrabike way more this winter than I have the U.A.V. as I always seem to be hauling or shopping or picking up the kids who love getting doubled on the way home... that and it's like a human powered snowmobile.

Can't wait until the weather looks like this again...

More commute, than bike. I took the picture because it was snowing pretty good, and it was supposed to come out all dramatic, or at least show how hardcore I am (to my non biking friends) but the camera managed to not pick up the snow at all...

I saw someone riding home during a section of the the news Tuesday where they were talking about how bad the commute was for some. It was pretty cool - they just rode right through the snow.

The Daily Grind, my '94 Nishiki Sport XRS, on my first commute with the new wheels. The old rear wheel was not stiff enough and was popping too many spokes.

That's quite a difference from the road bikes you have. I bet it does a great job.

I had to look twice though, to notice this actually isn't on my own commute. I come across a very very similar location during my ride.

Nice ride.

Chain seems a little tight on what must be the big / big combination.

It was actually the first bike I bought when I started to get back into cycling. I paid $100 for a 1994 model bike that was NOS (still had store price tags on it). It's been my workhorse. I've given it a lot of abuse and a few upgrades.

Yeah, that's big/big. The cranks were replaced about a year ago under warranty for the Shimano recall of the mid 90s. It came with a standard retrofit kit from Shimano that included new cranks, chain rings, front derailleur and chain.

Can you tell the story of the Shimano recall? I was out of touch at the time.

There is a link to the recall notice in my previous post. It talks about how to determine if a crank is recalled and what to do if it is. I think they are still honoring it (at least they did for me about a year ago).

In my case, someone pointed it out to me just before Christmas 2008, so I didn't ride the bike anymore until after it was fixed. My LBS is fairly new and had never gotten certification as a Shimano dealer. I told them I could wait and it ended up taking almost 3 months for them to get certified (lots o' paperwork). In the meantime, I commuted on the Dumpster Queen.
