Mango bike will require a new front tube at a minimum from the collision and maybe a wheel/tyre. Will add it to the cost, which is quite cheap compared to a house!

Even a half hour walk's gotta be hurting.

Thanks guys. It's been a few weeks and I was very, very sore at the beginning and now it's much better. It's my right wrist which is a PITA. However, it's much better now and should fully heal in another 6-8 weeks. I don't have much power in my right wrist and I'm right handed :/
ugh ... lesson learned.

Yup. A parked car. It's quite busy down here as I've shown in some photos. Should invest in some better gear, drink less beer when riding and take my time. Live and learn I guess.

Thanks, acidfast7. It takes a mensch to say something like that.

Hi!
I think it's about time for a proper update as the last update was in early February 2018. SInce then there have been 122 commutes (440 total on the bike) and I'm up to a total of 5101km/3169mi and I need the following updates in the cost:
1. I was run over by a van from behind that didn't stop and just ran me over. This required a new wheelset and a new tube. I was of the bike for a while as I healed. The total cost of the wheelset and the tube was £127, which I took from the driver in a bank transfer and then we hit the pub afterward. I assume that this will be a cost-neutral exercise, however, it does remove the ability to measure how long the original wheelset would last. Maybe one accident is an accurate assessment of longevity.
2. I had to replace the fenders on the bike and the Crud Roadracer MKII front one had snapped at the end and the rear finally broke off. Total cost of replacement is £31.98. This is most likely due:
Thus the updated additional cost of £34.98 with 122 more commutes.
episodes 318-440
5101km/3169mi
£605.76/$778.42 total
£0.1187/km
€0.1342/km
$0.2456/mi
£1.376/commute
€1.556/commute
$1.769/commute
Photo update tonight!

- A houseparty where my bike was thrown over the fence into the sea (was fished out)
- Two accidents with parked cars
- One van run over (aforementioned)
- Endless banging around in the bikecage and on the bikeracks

You've been frugal, yet I'm surprised to see that the cost has been $0.25 per mile. I wish more people did this to see what the average for many riders and bikes is. I would have hoped it's less, and maybe it is. Lots of people with little money ride bikes in Asia.

Bikes: Heavy, with friction shifters
For a "common sense - budget" commuter it goes below 4 euros per month, without using poor quality parts.
For a good quality bicycle, it's around 10 euros per month (if you buy 50 euro tyres, more expensive saddle, etc...) for a relatively high mileage use (30 km per day and up).
In terms of commute time, there's little difference.

FWIW, on my own BSO fixed gear inspired by this thread, I've spent $8.50 for a chain and $6 tubes in the past year, coming to about 0.4 cents per mile maintenance. Will want new tires after the winter though.

Cost per time is important as well, perhaps even more so. I keep track of all the investments (parts costs, don't pay for labour). For all the vehicles I use. But I don't bother with odometers on bicycles, so can only get a rough estimate of the mileage. Except from reletively recently, when I started a chain durability comparison experiment and "forced" myself to place odometer on one bicycle.

EDIT: interestingly, that means that my round-trip commute has been 239 h / 440 commutes or 0.54h x 60 min / h or 32.59 min RT or 16.295 min one-way since buying the bicycle.
So it's been:

£2.53/h
€2.66/h
$3.25/h

$0.2456/mi

Interesting facts in this UK-based document:
https://www.cyclinguk.org/resources/...ing-statistics
Number 4. My distance is about the same (5101 / 440 / 2 = 3.6 miles each way).
Number 17. Average weekly spend on transport. (£1/week ... I seem to be much higher than that.)
