Blah. Temperature dropped 20 degrees overnight, it's overcast and windy. And 5.01 EDT is TOO DANG EARLY!!

Yesterday's 20 miler was nice, though. Gusting tailwinds were pushing me home.

Haven't posted in this thread for a while. I have been riding- short rides about 5-6 miles duration.

Weather and roads have improved a bit here- hit 35F today, and there's a lot of mush spraying up.
The good thing about this is enough of the ice is off the roads, and that means road-bike time. :D
Got the miles in today on both bikes.

We missed you, glad you're still here :)

69 miles down to pinnacles national park and back. 3000’ climbing; 1900 on the outbound. Steady headwinds on the return made it more difficult than I was expecting.

Open water and shorts already? Won't see that here for another 3-4 weeks, at least on the open water.
Good on ya for getting out to ride.

Yeah we had a few days in the 70’s recently - nice - although we might be returning to the 40’s and 50’s soon. :(

But I will often wear shorts when biking in the 50’s and sometimes in the 40’s - as long as my upper body is warm I’m typically fine unless the temps dip below 40. Often shorts and Vans. :) I’ve even snowmobiled in shorts in late spring. :)

Picture below - Feb 11 2024 41 degrees :

I did recently get a new pair of tights and used them this year - maybe I’m getting soft. :)

The wind isn’t gusting to 40mph or 50mph today so I went to the lake for s 6 mile loop. I honestly wanted to do 2 or 3 laps but the wind was blowing 20mph and gusting a little. The lake had whitecaps.
I just couldn’t convince myself to go another lap upslope against the wind but it did feel good to get out.

Same here pepperbelly. The wife and I got out for 11 miles this morning before the wind kicked into a higher gear.
It's been a crazy few weeks.

I foolishly decided to wait until it got warm. I didn’t think about the wind coming up as the sun heats up.

Switched things up with a 15 mile walk that my partner wanted to do from Trenton to Princeton NJ, much of it along the Delaware & Raritan Canal towpath.. Perfect weather. Trees getting ready for Spring. Four and a half hours later and my legs and feet are shredded. I was envious of every rider that passed today from the fancy Canyons, to the basket packers, and the adults on the cheap, full-suspension Walmart bikes.

Good time though with an interesting array of folks.

Note to self: couch to 15 miles is ill advised.

I ride with cycling gloves - without exception. and I don't wrap bars until 100% happy with the build details - and I frequently like to experiment, ¿doesn't everyone change things up on several bikes? - narrow handlebars on this Harding / Holdsworth.

Newbaums is my wrap of choice, I ride supple tubulars (muchly) and leave the vibrations at the pavement.

Old, ugly and set in my ways….... besides, the vast majority of my rides are less than 2 hrs/30mi.

Managed 12 miles Tuesday afternoon, it was a beautiful but WINDY late winter / early spring day here & I was busting to get some real road miles after the 400+ I put on with my trainer so far this year. Good for getting a start on my balance acclimation again, not something a trainer's capable of. Wind blowing me left on the way north out of town, good at my back on the hilly east to west part the blowing me right again as I navigated at speed the mostly free of winter debris north to south bike path back into town.

Was going to ride trainer after work on Wednesday since it'd dropped about 30°F in 24 hours but my rear wheel's trainer tire was flat. Struggled for a couple hours patching, inflating, finding new leak, replacing with new tube, inflating only to find another leak (pinched likely as not in my haste) so I gave up.

Got it all sorted Thursday after work. Left new tube mounted & inflated overnight, fine Friday before I went in to work and when I came back around 1 PM. Too pooped to ride Friday so I did 16+ trainer miles to Rouvy route Saturday afternoon, a strong workout with a steepish climb to the finish:

Not sure why cadence is flatlined the first few miles, I know I can't pedal that steady for anything!

missinglink 03-23-25 06:27 PM

Wife and I got out for 12 miles around noon today. One of the better days we've had in quite a while weather wise.
Winds were light for a change and temps were in the 70s.

I've tried a couple of different padded wraps, and don't really like them. They seem to transmit an awful lot of roadshock through the bars- worse than un-wrapped.
Had a successful experiment with blue hockey tape on the bars of the Sekine. The only draw-back to using that is the rapid dirt and dust pick-up. Great feel though.
Factory neoprene wrap on the Motobecane is actually quite nice. I'm staying with it as long as the looks and condition hold up.

Still haven't tried the tubular thing yet- I'm having a great time on skinny clinchers at the upper end of the inflation range. Max is a bit on the harsh side- backing off 10 or 15 lbs. on the rear, and 15-20 on the front seems to be the comfort zone for me.

Today's Monday no drop ride. It got more & more windy as the morning went on, and blew pine tree pollen everywhere creating a hazy horizon and the start of the yellow season. It will get worse before it gets better

r.e. bold -- NO WORRIES about pine tree pollen and such around here much "cause Ian's and Milton's + other just regular storms have taken down 80+% of the trees. Lousy part is the trees provided a sound barrier that no longer exists -- :(.

I managed 2 short rides today. 1st was out at 4:00am for a very quiet 17.71 miles and 2nd was out at 12:46pm for 8.38 miles fetching meds. and wine.

Got out on a beautiful day for a 6 mile lap around the lake. Very little wind, sunshine and 80° with very low humidity.
I need to start pushing for 2-3 laps and not stop before it starts getting tough. That is a bad habit I have fallen into.
