I started walking again yesterday for the first time in about a year. Before I started cycling, I walked 8-10 miles a day, every day at a pace of 5+ mph.
When I started cycling, I stopped walking but now with the cold temps and icy conditions, I started walking again.
Yesterday, I did 1.8 miles in 26 minutes, well off my old pace. I share this because it would appear that fast cycling and fast walking are not as related as I would have thought.

Also, when I walk, it is mostly on the balls of my feet, not striking the heel very much. I guess that places more strain on the calves.

Absolutely fantastic!!!

I have the Celebration Half Marathon this coming Sunday. Have not walked since completing the Mickey Marathon at Walt Disney World on January 8th. It's going to be a slooooow walk but at least the weather will be in the 50'sF to begin with.

I used to be a runner before knee problems brought me to cycling. Lately, I find that I can run/walk without any knee pain, as long as I continue to mix in cycling and stretching. I read a book by Jeff Galloway called Run/Walk/Run that caused me to give it a try. I think that the alternating between running and walking prevents overuse injuries, since both movements use slightly different muscles. Mixing in cycling makes it even more effective. Plus, the running part of RWR really helps get the heart rate up.

I'm rather in awe my friend . . . I have a lot of walking in so far this year, but have ignored my bike. Walking as much as you do while riding as much as you do - I'm impressed! It's kinda Ken Kiferish lol

It is summer here so that does help. It may die off a bit come winter.

Today: 5.6 km walking on several walks throughout the day + 39 flights of stairs.
Isn't there a story/movie of that title ... "The 39 Steps"? Only mine were 39 flights of 20 steps each.

I love to walk. I do it mainly in early spring and late fall when it's too cold (for me) to ride. We've had an unusual warm spell here in MN, so I've walked about 3 miles a day over the past week. Otherwise I use the elliptical over the winter.
In the past I listened to music or podcasts, but lately I've been walking without either, alone in my thoughts.

I love walking for many reasons. I can listen to music or the radio (never on the bike). I can walk in pretty much any weather, even deep snow for which I have snowshoes. I can wander more. So I agree completely that there's no dichotomy between riding and walking.

Some walking statistics.
I thought I'd look back to see how I was doing this year and if I was on track. I knew I was ahead of the game early on, but a surgery in May ground things to a halt and then travelling for a month in June/July meant that we were doing more cycling and less walking. I'm pleased to see I'm still ahead of the game.
And a large portion of all that walking is utility walking.
Walking to date 2017: 673.05 km
Walking to date 2016: 613.12 km
Walking to date 2015: 597.55 km

If you only cycle as a form of exercise, it's funny how a brisk 2 mile walk will make you feel! You're working different leg muscles and cranking up the speed will give you a good workout. During the cold months I log a couple of fast miles daily.

Regarding walking ...
October 9, 2017 -- total to date for 2017: 902 km
October 9, 2016 -- total to date for 2016: 756 km
October 9, 2015 -- total to date for 2015: 809 km
Catching measles right at the end of August in 2016 kind of slowed me down a bit. But I'm really pleased with the total this year so far!

10.8 km of walking today. Not all at once, but it added up! And a lot of that was with a heavy backpack.
Today was Day 1 of the step challenge I signed up for.

Today I did a short (35 minute) aerobic walk through my neighborhood at my patented 3mph on a new pair of shoes -- New Balance 880v7 distance running shoes. First impressions are very positive. For a few years now my shoe of choice for walking has been running shoes, and for me the best has been New Balance. These new ones feel great. They allow a lot of feedback from the road (or sidewalk lol) yet are very nicely cushioned. Rock on, Garth!

I walk a lot also. I try to tally about 15 miles each week along with my 80 to 90 miles of riding. On wet days I up the walking mileage and side-line the bike. Now that cold weather is upon us I move some of my riding indoors on the cycle machine and work out in the gym also.
What I really miss are my cross country ski days in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan during my college days. I used to race nearly every weekend and they'd have City Races two times a week at night in the local cemetery, yep, the cemetery! I often went out and hit the groomed ski trails late at night logging in about 20k on the long loop. The serene and silent night skis in the north woods were my time to meditate and take stock of my life. I really miss those night skis.

I like both too but I don't mind doing both concurrently. Last Winter, I replaced cycling with cross-country skying. My stats since January are:
Cycling (not including stationary cycling): 5024 km
Walking (not including thread run or running, just walking): 639.2 km
Cross-country skying: 77.3 km
Hopefully nature will be more generous with snow next Winter and I'll be able to start skying sooner.

Why did you guys have to mention cross-country skiing? Now i have more losses to mourn.
Yes indeed, very meditative ... and night skiing was like being on the moon, but with trees .... no life, no sound (no echo with all the snow ...) The kind of peace you really can't find even in the woods any other time of year.

Last Sunday's walk ... or rather, hike ...
Sunday -- Although we were hoping to ride a local 100 km event, Rowan had to work today.
So instead of cycling, I decided to do a bit of a hike. Earlier in the week, something had come up on a Tasmanian tourist site on Facebook about a sea arch in our suburb. We've been here 3 years and I didn't know anything about it. So I looked it up and decided to go have a look.
First I walked along our beach, and then up into the cliffs along the ocean. From there I climbed to a road that took me quite close to the sea arch. I was puzzled for a moment because I was sure there was a way down to it, but at first all you can see are private drives. And then ... there it is! A rather camouflaged trail which descended right down the cliff with a long series of stairs.
The tiny cove with the sea arch was beautiful ... worth the hike! I took some photos which I'll post later.
And then I hiked up all those stairs and back.
Distance: 12.6 km
Elevation: 332 m
Moving Time: 2:15:45
Elapsed Time 2:43:19
Pace: 10:43/km
