I've seen one in a local(ish) store; it really does look classy in silver and it's on my list of potentials.
The one question the sales people couldn't give me a definite answer to was maximum tyre width - would this bike frame support a 35mm tyre if fenders were installed.
Does anyone have any clue on this (preferably first-hand experience)?

least the one time I called the direct.
As for looking classy, it sure does. I had my bike shop order this bike for me. Let me just say when I got the call to go pick it up I was excited. When I walked in and seen it in person I immediately fall in love with it!!

Yes, that's what the verified reply (Andrew@Trek) states; there's an unverified reply a bit lower on the page that claims 35mm "pavement" tyres will fit with Bontrager NCS fenders though.
I'm planning on visiting another Trek dealer soon, so I'll wait and see/hear/read.

New FX 4
I picked up my new FX 4 today from the LBS. I have a mountain bike and a “classic” hybrid, but I wanted something lighter and faster for daily rides on the road. FX 4 is that in spades - light, quick start with a noticeably stiffer ride. Very happy with the bike though I will be looking for another saddle. And keeping the mountain bike for off-road.

Awesome forum and fantastic thread. I read every post (took me some time!). Got a list going... Was on this forum some years ago doing research--must have never registered.
I've been out of biking for too long and have been itching to get back into it. Thought I wanted an DS4 but wasn't sure I needed a front suspension as I really see me just riding on the road. Did some more research and really liked the FX line. Ordered an FX4 because I was not sure about the frame on the FX5 (due to my ignorance--nothing else) but I rode them both a little. After researching the carbon frame on the FX5 it really intrigued me so I called the LBS and told them I wanted to go with the FX5. Should be in in a week or so. They did call and say the Thule bike rack I ordered is in and ready for pickup (T2 Pro XT 2). Really looking forward to getting her. Now the Mrs. just needs to get in there and pick one out for her so we can ride together.
And thanks for all the valuable info everyone has posted! Guess I need to make some posts now so I can show a pic of my new bike when it comes in. Not that anyone needs to see what it looks like. Lol

Testing my homemade 1x conversion
I've written elsewhere about how much I hated the trigger shifters of my 2014 7.6 FX. Given that the Dahon Vigor I test-rode the other day also had a trigger shifter that I had no problems dealing with, I figured that my problem with the 7.6 might be that there's one too many shifters.
This morning, I decided to test out a makeshift 1x conversion. I swapped the positions of the chainrings; the spider bolts being too thick to hold the 50t chainring alone tight onto the spider, the 34t chainring ended up serving as a spacer: :
Next, I unbolted the front derailleur and its shifter, and took the bike out for a test ride. With just one shifter to worry about, it's a much more pleasant bike to ride now. Even with the long-legged 50t chainring, the 36-11 rear cassette seems to have more than enough spread for most situations.
The chain jumped off the chainring and/or jammed itself between the cassette and the dropout several times. It looks like it might be an issue with the extreme chain lines, but a couple of adjustments to the H and tension screws seemed to have taken care of these issues for now:
I'm still testing the bike out, but a chainring that's between 42t and 48t might seem a little more useful. Amazon have this really nice FSA Vero 42t crank that looks like it might work as a direct bolt-on. Other sources have several chainrings that can bolt to the factory crank spider, such as this 46t Origin8. I'll see about these later.

FINALLY took her for a ride tonight. Only about six miles but dang this thing is fast! Needed to adjust the seat and it was a lot better after I did that (had to do it when I got home as I'm still have some stuff shipping to me). I was just too excited to finally ride her and realized after I was on the road that I needed to put the seat up.
LOVE the ride. Looking forward to so many things. Need to figure-out some pedals. I have some Dura-Ace pedals from my old bike but not really sure I want to wear bike shoes with this bike. Need to look into options. Clips seem old.

Thanks!
Full disclosure, I was not even close in height--I was just excited to take her for a spin. The fine-tuning started when I got home with tools and will continue for a little while.
I'm thinking about the Shimano Deore XT PD-T8000 SPD Trekking MTB Bike Bicycle Track Pedals and a pair of Shimano Sh-ME3 Mountain Bike Shoe. My choices in shoes are limited as I believe I need size EU 49. Ordered an Ortleib Ultimate 6S Classic Handlebar Bag today. Need to suck it up and order an ABUS 540 U-Lock.
Or just ride it for a little while...
I have an FX3 and have the Shimano A530 which have clip on one side and platforms on the other. They’re slightly more complicated to clip into if upside down but allow me to ride comfortably with either bike shoes or not.

I can relate. getting the saddle adjusted just right (height, fore, after & angle, etc) with a new bike sometimes requires adjustments during a ride. don't feel bad if you wind up tweaking it several times. regarding pedals, I like mini (aka 1/2 clips) w/o straps. I also like cycling specific flat bottom MTB shoes, but not using the cleat feature

Wanting some alternative hand positions I purchased a set of Ergon GP5 Grips, Large. Went to install them and found they won't work with the handlebar on my bike as the bar ends are not round. The top ~1/3 of the bar-ends have rubber for vibration dampening and the Ergon grips are designed to tighten on a full round bar-end. Is a new handlebar my only option to get these Ergon grips to work?

Those look like they're work with stand-alone bar ends, but I don't think it'll work with Ergon GP5, which is a completely different grip, right?

Adapter kit from Trek was just what I needed. I did have to remove a shoulder on the grip though so everything fit. I took pics but I believe I need a couple more posts after this one to be able to post them. I don't want to be the guy that just makes useless posts just to get to post pics.

So our son has ridden my wife's FX4 and he's ALL OVER IT. Absolutely LOVES it. His B-Day is coming up and he's been saving for a new bike. My wife ordered him an FX2 Disc and it came-in yesterday. We picked it up today. The Mrs. had it all planned with the LBS and he had no idea. He was SO STOKED when he realized it was HIS new bike. Our daughter got his reaction on video. I'd post the video but I need a few more posts...

That's great hope he enjoys it for a long time. And very interested to see how your bar-ends came out.

Maybe pics will work now.
Here my bike is the day I picked her up. Also got my Thule rack the same time. It was like Christmas. Lol.
Here's my grips. Had to remove an interior collar and order the Trek accessory kit previously mentioned for them to work. Love the Dremel. These give me a some alternative hand positions so my hands don't go numb. Really just need to use my stomach muscles to take some weight off my hands. Got some Ortlieb accessory bags on her now. Need to take some pics of them.
And here's the wife's FX4.
We're LOVING these bikes. They are amazing and I feel privileged to be able to purchase them. Years ago when I was into bikes something like this was only a pipe dream. And now we can buy them.

My 2017 FX 3 with its new Chesters. Finally, a little color!
