Man those bike billboards should be outlawed....our streets are congested enough.
The roadways in downtown should be for moving people, I love the fairing on the front at the handlebar level, like it's going to do anything, hilarious. I wouldn't mind getting my hand on a trike version to make a cargo bike. lol. Do I have to wear orange coveralls to ride one those. Even more useless than pedicabs. All for advertising, nothing actually gets moved on the street. BAN 'em.... too dangerous for the likes of our streets. I can see the pedicab trying to pass, or vice versa and then the road rage fist fight between them lol. :D

Man drivers hate us enough as it is, imagine how pissed they will be getting trapped behind one of those bad boys.

Things to not bode well for CM: http://www.theweathernetwork.ca/weat...s/CAON0696.htm

Hey Traffic Jammer, what's your favourite version of the Time ATACS you've used over the years?

somnambulant 03-30-06 08:59 AM

ugh.. I've had a bad bike karma 24 hours.

-when I tried to leave work I realized I had a flat rear tire. replace tube, inflate, yadda yadda
-start riding, hear a new jingly noise. pull over, jiggle bike around trying to locate the source. can't find it. give up, keep riding.
-get to St. Claire and notice back wheel now has a lot of play in the hub. Get off, take out 15mm wrench. Tighten down hub locknut(?)
-get to my friend's place.. decide to try and locate jingly noise again. notice that a metal "sleeve" (spacer?) on the axle between the locknut and the outside "nut" (the part that contacts the inside of the dropout). I never noticed it before, but I think it's causing the noise.
-decide to remove rear wheel again to try and fix things. Put Park 15mm wrench on drive-side nut, apply force, wrench goes through nut like butter totally shearing through one "corner" or the nut.
-give up again, go drink beer and eat steak.
-ride home
-sleep
-go to ride to work.. notice back wheel needs more air, but I've already left the house (and my floor pump). Try to get more air in with my frame pump. Hate life.
-riding along bloor, resist pedals to slow down, pedals slip backwards half a rotation. wtf? check locknut, totally loose. do my best to tighten it using a combination of my hands and the edge of my wrench. use brake (which I might add needs serious adjustment.. guess I don't use it much) the rest of the way.

*sigh*

TRaffic Jammer 03-30-06 09:02 AM

The very first ones.... the cleat was monster.... you could slide on it on a foot down hard turn if you had to it was designed to function well AND to last forever which is exactly what it did. Now I need new shoes because it's not compatible with the new ATAC cleats. When I bought mine Time and Shimano were gettin ready for their big head to head in this market. Time must have realized that having a proprietary cleat/bolt pattern would not do. I did however get the first pair of Sierra pedals and shoes as a combo for .....wait for it.....200$ from Racer Sportif. Now, designed to wear out and fail faster, the new one I bought is totally wimpy in comparison, designed for obsolescence...BUT it bidness so no surprises there. I'm just bummed the design changed so much I need to drop 200-300 bucks on new shoes. That wasn't in the plan at all.

Even with my old cleat being 12 years old it still had more metal than these new ones.
He asked me if it was ATAC road or MTN ....what's the difference? Are ATACs different for the road vs mtn? Ultimately the plan is for Times on all bikes and one pair of shoes.

i have to agree; those things just seem like a waste of energy. almost worse than the car-based ones though as they just save the advertiser more money and still get in everyone else's way. it just seems to me to be a reflection of a society of abundance and waste. i don't know who here's been to vegas (i know, it was a "family" vacation, not my choice), but there are guys there who are paid to be out on the street handing out catalogues / flyers for stippers and as they hand them out they scatter them on the ground to people will see them as they walk by. it's just such indugence. rant mode: off.

TRaffic Jammer 03-30-06 09:14 AM

I still want one for a cargo bike though. That baby'll carry at least a keg or two. I'm gonna email them. lol A larger fork and 26er's please. Well, I was thinkin' not just the other day.... 'You know... I simply don't see enough advertising here in the core. I need more....':p I wish people would put as much thought into making this place a better city as they do figuring out new garbage can and bike designs to hold billboards.

jeremywhitehorn 03-30-06 09:30 AM

TrafficJammer - i have an old set of ATACs (alium) if you're interested in trading / purchasing / whatever. did i mention this before?

TRaffic Jammer 03-30-06 09:40 AM

If you did I missed it..... thanks but no, I've managed to wreck the mini screw holes on the bottom of the one shoe so now it's ****ed. Besides I can't keep running around looking for antique gear, old school or not. Besides if I'm running on all ancient gear it'll be far too embarrassing for you lot being left behind. I'm only thinkin' of you guys.....:p

you should be able to replace the mounting plates on spd compatible shoes. can you not remove the plate from the inside and pop in a new one? my LBS guy told me that even with some models of shoes where the plates are buried beneath the insoles, he has taken a router or whatever and was able to cut enough of the insole away to be able to get at the mounting plate. just a thought; i'm all about fixing what you've already got.

road shoes are a different story as the cleat bolts right to the bottom of the sole...

and if you're hyped on schooling us with your antique gear, we'll just have to show up in clips n' straps (or a high-wheeler) and take YOU to school!

TRaffic Jammer 03-30-06 10:03 AM

wooohooo that would be fun..... you know of course i'm blowin smoke and having fun...:p
Never even thought about going into the shoe.
Mine has this separator that runs done the middle of the sole, if you've got the old atacs you know what I mean.... It might just be time for a new set O shoes.

jeremywhitehorn 03-30-06 10:19 AM

have you got the 1st generation time's with that super-long cleat? those shoes / pedals aren't compatible with modern spd systems? yeah, it might be time for a new set of shoes. check at Duke's; this time of year they seem to be clearing out the last years stock to make room for the latest and greatest.

of course i know you're blowing smoke, i still think we should have a low-tech throw down: a cut-off dickes and rusty 3 speed race!

TRaffic Jammer 03-30-06 10:27 AM

with sissy bars and streamers?

TRaffic Jammer 03-30-06 10:29 AM

With sissy bars, streamers and NorthStar runners..... Will Pony's do? I bought the cleats at Duke's, and they were clueless. So..... savin' up. Damn all this old school talk I wanna be low-riding right now.

yeah, streamers and a big basket on the front so the bike handles all tippy. oh and a horn and some sort of stuffed animal zip tied to the frame.

man, northstar runners, that's *****rs 1982, yo. takes me back. and yes, pony's will do. i remember wanting those as a kid becuase there was a poster of spud webb a la playing for the atlanta hawks way back when on my wall. enough of this nostalgia, i want to go riding? who else is going to be out pedalling after work?

somnambulant 03-30-06 11:03 AM

I likely have to stay late and code.. ugh. spring is not good for trying to be productive. :P

TRaffic Jammer 03-30-06 11:29 AM

Yup monster cleat....like a grind bar, and I have used it thusly on hairy corners.
Awesome got me my leather low Pony's from Dixie Value Mall, last year for 30 bones....(lovely wife found 'em...thanks hun) At 5 I ride home ...... I'm off tomorrow with my daughter. CM!!!!!! The more people there are in it the more law enforcement is out there in the rain and thunder. A shame political activism is dependent on good weather, man are we EVER apathetic in this country. lol , not a dis but an observation.

I was just wondering if anyone here rides a Fuji Track Pro. I want to know how they ride on the street. I have seen one courier guy on one but was going the opposite way when I saw him and couldn't ask him his opinion. I have played around with the Pista Concept on display at Urbane and really like the feel of aluminium but think that the Track Pro is a better deal. Any thoughts?

At Yonge and Dundas when on break I see three messengers go by on Fuji Pro's all the time just hang there and chase them down .P.S. I saw a messenger there who's bike frame was covered in carpet.

Sounds so crazy it could be true.

If it is Bianchi spec ie: Sugino 75`s and Cane Creek wheels, you would be hard pressed to find a nicer off the peg bike. Also the Bianchi frame is much nicer imho. I am not aware of the price difference but if it were me....and I could afford either....I would take the Bianchi hands down. If you want to trade the wheels for some clinchers the price should come down a few bucks.

TRaffic Jammer 03-30-06 02:57 PM

Bianchi. you can't ever go wrong...too many years of building bikes to ignore.

jet sanchEz 03-30-06 03:26 PM

Hrm, good advice guys, thanks. Did anyone notice those CL postings regarding track bikes? Two in the last two days, I think it is the same guy, any input on those frames that are "handcrafted in a little shop in taiwan that only does high end frames" for only $300. The listing is "toronto eastend downtown" and the photo is in front of a bike shop I don't recognize, what do you guys think? Sketchy?

operator 03-30-06 03:48 PM

I'd just buy the frames Cavern was selling if it was $300.

cavit8 03-30-06 03:56 PM

What's the worst that could happen if you just go to have a boo at them?

sweep242 03-30-06 04:01 PM

That’s pollys bike in front of his old shop pollys recycle i know he had some made a while ago i'm sure he has some left? Don’t know much about the frame it’s self. He’s hard to get ahold of but worth a look lot’s of goodies in his shop.
Cheers
P.S. maybe that guy bought it from Polly?

VA(SG) 03-30-06 04:07 PM

Maybe its Cogs cycle near logan on gerrard. That guy had a Polly frame for sale in there.
It's pretty nice looking in person.
Nice guy that cogs guy.

sr20det 03-30-06 04:33 PM

I think this is the same frame in question selling for the same price. $299:

hmmmmm.....handcrafted....little shop........Taiwan. The trifecta of oxy-morons right there. It is indeed a Polly frame. Some people love em...some people hate em. They are very street. Not a bike for Forest City thats for sure. I used to sell a few of em a year for Polly. Rumour has it....well he told me actually....that he is doing some new frames. More track geometry. I believe the name was to be Zombie cycles. I suggested Answer My Door in a Housecoat Cycles...but he didnt like it.
