why the downward pointing stem? how can you see your way around in traffic?

Fair enough. The thing is that even though the stem is pointing down it is raised up quite a bit and the actual height of the bars is about equivalent to a straight ahead stem all the way down, or even raised a bit. Why that stem? Because it looks hawt. Honestly I don't think that's too ridiculous. It depends on the dude's position when he rides it. If he's got a goofy position and is way too low then yeah something is wrong. The thing is sometimes bike setups can be deceiving. This one surprised me the first time I saw it:

http://velospace.org/node/303

Look at the drop from saddle to bars on this bike! But then look at the pic of the guy taking his own picture from a reflection and notice that he's riding pretty upright. He has long limbs. This is just my really long way of saying you never know from just looking at someone's bike. God I need to stop posting I swear this is probably it for me today :) Cheers dudes

Wow, Phil's lookin' kinda creepy in that middle pic.

In the full photo he's bunny hopping a guy's head. Consider that expression concentration and the consideration of ramifications.

Eno hub and crank, wow that's an expensive setup. $350-400 for that alone. Sexy, very nice. One day, mine too shall be that nice. Or at least nicer.

archeology of bikes, very neat find.
Sir Robin , that Klein was suuuweeet

Had a bonus run in to work today, arctic headwinds and I catch a 5ton truck heading to DT on queen. Bonus usually no trucks there, drafted off it all the way in to town, not fast but the air was perfectly still (read WARMER) and being a foot and half behind the truck made me untouchable to all. woohooo :p

Time will be a bit limited this year but there should still be a "rubber class" race. Helmets are mandatory.
Hot food and beverages will be available at the rink (they have a nice little homemade food snack-bar)
Alternative beverages are BYOB.
Not sure about the afterparty...there might just be a little awards ceremony at the rink.

The only thing I could find was a reference on the wheelmen's site (thewheelmen.org):

Planet-(M) McLean & Bulley, Toronto ON Canada, 1896

Maybe it's just me but riding anything pre-1960 seems to be a waste of time.
If you break it, theres like no way you're going to fix it.
Stuff like old BBs and Cottered cranks make me cringe.

The vintage aesthetic is the only thing I can think of that would make you want to ride one.

It's like running a 486 when you could run at least PII-300.
The hardware just isn't practical.

That is all.

You'd pretty much have to have a vintage aesthetic - and I do to a point. And I don't have a Kierin aesthetic, so different strokes. I"d love to put an old piece of rolling iron back on the road. I'm surprised you didn't liken it to using a Turbo Express rather than a wii. Bonk is available for both :D

I have an old Raleigh that I'm slowly putting together for my winter bike -- yeah, yeah, it's almost spring. But i love the bodacious headbadge and all. I had to convert it from cottered cranks but it seems to be coming together quite nicely. Not as practical as buying a more modern frame, but it keeps it out of the landfill and makes me happy.
