Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I got the Jeep inspected this morning. It only took an hour and the mechanic has Wi-Fi.

I am running into a problem with the geometry of the tandem. (LoP already knows about this. I'm not talking out of school.) I didn't feel I was being able to transfer as much energy as I wanted through the pedals on hills so we raised my saddle. Still not enough so we raised the saddle again. LoP seems to think we are going up hills just fine but I still am not happy and I believe the reason I'm feeling more soreness in the front of my thighs rather than anywhere else is because I'm not being able to extend my legs and pedal all the way through. But if we raise the saddle any more, I'll be practically unable to get on and off the bike by myself. While it might be amusing and adorable to bystanders to see LoP lift and position me, I'm hoping for a slightly less chivalrous solution. A flatter saddle? Would moving it back maybe help? Should I take this to a forum other than the 41? The tandem forum doesn't have a number and that makes me a little uncomfy.

Ramona, how can a saddle be too high to get onto if it isn't too high to pedal? You don't mount the saddle directly. You put your leg over the top tube and raise yourself up on the pedal. If you can reach the pedals, you must be able to mount the saddle by yourself. I can't imagine what you mean.

You shouldn't be learning that kind of stuff from me. I should strive to be a good influence here. Like @Heathpack is. But it's probably too late, isn't it?

Don't sell yourself short. I'd write more encouragement if I could stop laughing.

Oh. I didn't know I was supposed to be raising myself up on the pedal. I've been putting my leg over the top tube then, standing on my very tippiest toes, backing up to mount the saddle in a very unladylike fashion.

And at a stop you support yourself on the "down" pedal and come forward off the saddle and put your other foot on the ground. You don't try to balance on tippy toes with your tush on the saddle. That is way harder than necessary. It is a poseur affectation. REAL cyclists come to a stop straddling the top tube with one foot on a pedal. When it is time to start again, you rotate the pedal to 12:00, and lift yourself up onto the saddle while pedaling forward. Easy-peasy. That is my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Ramona, one of the problems that stokers often have is that they can't get the seat back far enough. They feel cramped and that they need to raise their saddle which is often the case, however, the position is often a compromise on a tandem. Captains often have to compromise, too, but many tandem designs seem to affect the stoker's pedaling position more.

My wife has the same problem. Her saddle always seems low and that she can't apply the proper amount of power. She also gets pain in her hip joints, not sure why that is, but she doesn't get it on her singles. She already has a setback seat post on our tandem but she still can't get back far enough to get in the proper leg position over the cranks.

Anyway, no real suggestions other than that you are not alone.

That's very nice of you to let him gaze at his leisure. BTW, the blue jacketed person second from the right in my pic is my wife.
