Another deal for a good riding mower in the works now. This one is more expensive, but much newer. I like to think of it as costing 4 months worth of yard service... seems WAY cheaper that way.

It's a JD LT150.

That's the one I have, or at least a very close model. 12 years old, same tires, and I couldn't tell you when I or anyone else last changed the oil (hmmm...). Runs great, very dependable with the 3.2 acres that needs to be mowed at least once a week for 8-9 months of the year.

If the front axle breaks, I can give you some tips on how to replace it.

I didn't want to admit this when you first introduced the topic, but I've also experienced this. Heavy gauge wire in a figure 8 pattern also works just fine :innocent:.

I recall that when I was 14 years old I went over to my friend's house and happened to mention that I have to mow the lawn and just as now, I didn't like it.

He and his father teased me about "mowing" the lawn, which I suppose in their puny brain was a funny way of suggesting I was having same-sex relations with the grass.

It's strange how stupid stuff like that stays with you.

Depends on where the break is. Most tractors have an L-shaped axle, the horizontal axle is for the wheel to spin and the vertical axle is to rotate the wheel. If it breaks near the wheel I think your bodge will work, but mine broke clean through the part where the horizontal and vertical meet. The part can be had for $30ish from ScamBay.

Ah. Yes, it was at the ball-and-socket joint where the horizontal axis meets the wheel on the left front wheel (evidently I have a predisposition to turning left- lawn mowing Nascar, anyone?). I've been meaning to fix it correctly for a couple of years now but hey, it's holding up just fine :o.

I highly recommend a hub dynamo if you do much riding in the dark or low light conditions. Never again will batteries be an issue. It would be a good opportunity to learn to build a wheel too. Win win.

My first bike c. 1977 had one of those. Of course it had a banana seat too, quite stylish then.

That's good to hear. I believe this one is 12 years old as well.

I'm only dealing with half an acre, so I should be good.

Y'all have the hydro versions, right? I just saw that there's also a geared version running around of the LT150, which I don't really want.

jtaylor996 06-05-17 12:14 PM

Damn, two awesome bands in town on the Thursday (Sierra Hull, and Punch Brothers with Chris Thile), and I can't find a damn babysitter. :(

I may have to leave the wife home.

My Campy rear wheel keeps (un)screwing with me. One spoke, keeps completely loosening and I keep retightening. It completely unscrewed on my latest ride. Starting to think either the spoke or nipple is partially stripped.

This particular wheel has a special magnetic tool, to use for retrieving the nipple as it has a sealed design.

Of course, when I saw the tool, I made sure to put it in a safe place. I assume it is very safe - although completely useless as I have no idea where this safe place is .

Guessing could find another magnet or work-around. Sounds like an exercise in frustration

Yes, mine is a hydro.
Question: is a propelled gas-powered push mower not an option for half an acre? It's completely your choice, I understand, but a riding mower takes up a lot of space in a garage, and a push mower could be an option for cross-training.

Yeah, it is, but my wife is unable to start our current push mower. I'd need an electric start push mower, and those are like the same price as the used riding mower. So for the same price I get all of the fun of tractor ownership.

Bike satisfaction news- had my chain jumping randomly when hitting bumps. Chain is relatively new, hanger just got replaced. I ended up putting on new jockey wheels and fixing a slight bend in the pulley cage thanks to my wreck, now it shifts like a hot knife through tofurkey or whatever the expression is.

I've been a little hard to find the last few days. Last Wednesday, I started running down like a battery. Since we passed a golf course, some farmers cutting hay, a couple waterways getting mowed and the road ditch mowers had been out. Grass is my number one allergy nemesis, plain old grass. So I pushed hard to finish the last 10 miles of the ride and collapsed when I got home.

Easy club tandem ride on Thursday night and the same thing happened.

Get up Friday morning and I've got what my doctor has always called an allergic cold, something I get during grass pollen season in late Spring and again around the first of September. No sore throat, no fever, no headache just a very sore chest and a cough if I do anything to breathe deep.

Usually, I don't lay off riding but this time, I passed up three gorgeous days of 80-85° temps with light winds. My wife rode and has showed me her Strava rides every chance she gets.

Finally got out with the trike club today. Since I can usually run as fast as they ride, I knew they wouldn't hurt me and it was indeed a FOG ride of epic slowness but I loved every minute of it. :thumb:

Keep on keepin' on. Just got my GP setup and going to head over soon for a recommendation on allergy shots again. Until then it's fighting the good fight with over the counter stuff.

Finance girl brought in some real estate books for me to read. Claims she reads ~50 books a year. I'm lucky if I've done an instruction manual in the past year.
