Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looks like I'm going to ride outside tomorrow. First time since early November. An organization is doing a casual no drop ride a few miles from my house, so I figured it would be rude not to go.

Still going to Zwift tonight, though.

I am in the opposite boat. Big rainstorm coming in, so I will be doing a bike club group ride on Zwift tomorrow. Fake miles. Sad!

A first, as far as I can remember. When returning the water bottle to its cage, I mis-calculated, and it glanced off to the right and disappeared. Having walked back and forth several times, I'd given it up for lost (unbelievably). Checked the other side of the road and there it was. I was particularly concerned, because this is one of my two (recently) collectible Nashbar bottles.

Oh and, I got an email this morning from Amazon.mx outlet. They had on offer a set of three Zefal plastic tire levers, for the fire sale price of US$75. I passed. I did take delivery, yesterday, of a 27" UltraSport II tire, for which I paid US$15 delivered. The $5 Koolstop bead jack is on its way.

I had a similar experience this past summer on a down hill. Did the same, giving it up for lost, only to find it 200 or so feet down the road, standing straight up.

I am an ex-smoker from 15-plus years ago... so what I say may seem a bit harsh. But indyfabz should be reporting the woman to his bosses and getting her removed from employment. The breaking of office rules is bad enough.

As to smokers around hospitals, the Royal Hobart Hospital and the other one I was in afterwards have rules that ban interior smoking. But frigging patients, and even worse staff, are consistently seen on the footpath outside the RHH, and in the lawn garden of the other hospital smoking quite heavily.

A patient in my last room at the second hospital had been there for quite a while, but made it his duty to get out of the hospital in his wheelchair every day for puffing at least seven cigarettes a day. Probably a reason why he never slept at night (or the afternoon) without horrible snoring, and reacted badly when told his care was being transferred away from the hospital to either his home or a professionally run older-people's home.

Apparently, Machka had to deal with a number of medical questions about my possibility of smoking (which I don't figure out why, but it seems some of it has to do with the number of people they have had of my age still smoking, and also might have had to do with the severe round of pneumonia I suffered just days after my first admission).

We might leave the TV on, but most of my attention goes down to the route we are taking on the Zwift route that Machka has selected. The laptop computer we each have provides the visual from Zwift, and some of the route have been really interesting.

Ours are both the older style trainers, and we don't have any plans to upgrade them at all. For me, once coming out of hospital, the whole trainer and Zwift thing she had formulated for me has helped to add back my severely lost bike (and general) fitness, allowed us to ride together as the images on the respective computers running Zwift enabled, and got us through some not pleasant outside winter weather. Also, I was supposedly not really supposed to cycle on public roads for a while on instruction by senior medical staff on my exit from hospital.

Now it is summer here, and I have loved the Christmas/New Year trip away we have done because of the healthy cycling element that it involved. And the part of the state we were in is certainly one of our favorite cycling areas because the terrain is sympathetic, the scenery lovely, the farm life nice, and the road users generally friendly, careful and safe to be among.

And adding to that, the packages Machka bought, both have sensors that attach (a) to the rear rim to determine (some sort of) speed and (b) a crank to determine pedaling speed.

I think the wheel rotating sensor (hence speed and distance) reads quite a bit differently to the actual bike computer which on this bike transferred the pick-up from the front to rear wheel. This is despite the wheel circumference figures being the same.

There is no more “walking” with Puppy Love. There is only “hunting”. All she wants in life is to catch a critter.

Mr H is building her a set of Earthdog tunnels as we speak.

The Year of Jones went by quickly. The year of Datlas is off to a wet start down here in Georgia. The weather is supposed to be sunny and warm the next week and I look forward to some real miles. Excellence achieved at work this week.
Update complete.

It's a wet Saturday here. I signed up for a club ride on Zwift. Fake miles may be sad but better than no miles.

For my chainsaw adventure, they suggest wearing a hard hat. I think the closest I have is a bike helmet.

What is lumberjack speak for a “Fred?” That will be me, if the rain stops.

Zwift group ride was semi-fail as I got dropped pretty early on. I still rode for an hour on the NYC course and there was some silly banter/chat via Discord so the hour went by quickly.

If you're going to be using said chainsaw very much, I would recommend the hardhat/face screen/ear muffs combo. It makes wonderful adjunct to chainsaw use. Even if you're not going to be using it very much. It only takes one mistake.

I use a separate face screen and earmuffs, because here, the combo costs nearly as much as the chainsaw. Sad!

how about earplugs/bike helmet/ski mask? That’s my plan. Will NOT post pics.

So I am not a data freak and I know my limitations. Looking at the group ride from Zwift today tells me I did 120W for an hour (which I felt was medium effort) while my friends did 160-190W for the same hour. No wonder I got dropped!

I think I either need to HTFU or find slower friends.

120 sounds a little low for a guy like you. Are you sure your gizmo’s calibrated? If it is, have your friends dialed themselves in a little handicap?

I did calibrate the trainer but friends all seem shocked I seem relatively “weak” on Zwift rides so may be off. It’s all fake miles anyway so I am not bothered by it. I can drop them like a stone on the hills in reality and that matters more!

Was this a super recovery ride? Is it that you weigh sub-40kgs? You may want to do an advanced spin down on your Snap, in the Wahoo app.
