Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

All states now follow a uniform set of National Road Rules, so it doesn't matter what state your in (except the states of "insobriety" and "under the influence of drugs" ).

So yes, you are legally entitled to ride up the left side of traffic to the front of the queue if you want to.

Two things come to mind tho:

Often the path down the left side is blocked by a motorist too far left. Is it OK to lanesplit to get past the blockage?

Being at the front of the queue now puts you in more danger than if you had stayed in the lane of traffic, because you're off balance and not clipped in for the first few metres and drivers behind you cannot determine a predictable path. Should there be an amendment to the rules to allow cyclists to legally roll through red lights when cross traffic is given amber (and where safe) so they can get up to speed without hindering traffic?

[edit]if you get bored you can read the entire thing here: https://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/rulesregul...austr_dl1.html [/edit]

2 bikes, both mountain bikes taken from marayong in sydney. one was an 05 Mongoose Teocali, the other an 04 Norco Storm. both white. have posted it up on farkin.net as they have a good lost/found/stolen section. there goes my partner for the 8 hour on the 19th march aparantly a few houses have been knocked off in similar circumstances. neighbors called the cops after seeing 2 guys ride off on the bikes as get away vehicles....

luckily he was insured. he wasnt totaly happy with the mongoose, but you never like to get that sort of thing happen

Damn, sucks to have yer steeds nicked. Hope he gets them back.

I've never had a bike stolen. Maybe because the seat of my bikes are 10ft off the ground and they're usually pink, gold or orange?

Good news about the 'ride to the front at the lights' rule. Yay for me, now I appear consciencious. *thumbs up*

I think all cyclists need to learn how to track stand... Problem solved. However my current gear selection for the SS makes me a bit slow to start.

I've been finding that traveling though traffic on the right side is sometimes better here in melbourne. People tend to sit left of the tram lines which usually blocks cyclists and gives you the joy of having no escape from opening doors.

If I'm going straight (and let's face it, I'm only talking about Beach Rd coz that's the only place I have the guts to ride), I roll up to the front then sit out of the way of the cars. When the light goes green, and if there's only a few cars in the left lane, I'll let them pass me before I swing into the lane.

I ain't got the guts to do the 'right hand turn' trick that you described -- it sometimes takes me a few seconds to get my put in the pedal, and I'm not doing a w@nky track stand in front of 50 drivers!!!

I don't like being at the back of a queue at traffic lights since I got rear ended in my car by some silly chick talking on her mobile phone. If I had of been on my bike I would have been squashed. I'll go up the front where there's some metal protecting me thanks.

Didn't look right without the ears. Looks better when it's not 64x64 pixels. Maybe?

Good to see some new Aussies on here lately. You guys may even see the part time return of your favourite seppo soon. Sucks about the username though. Maybe change it to "Repatriated"?

I hope there was a beating or two involved. Sometimes the suspect struggles, and things happen...

Ha ha. Did you see the controversy last week with Steve Bracks? He was inspecting the cells at a new cop shop or lockup and made a crack about the ol' telephone book questioning technique! Apparently the coppers there pissed themselves laughing. I never even knew Bracksy had a sense of humour!

Bikes: 2006 Trek 5200, Avanti Corsa Pro, Giant Yukon, Ricardo Cro-Mo, 1992 Mongoose pro-comp, 1980 DiamondBack senior pro, 1980 Quicksilver... half a dozen other BMX bikes in various stages of completion.

Yayy! I came second at the Tues night crits
Didn't tow everyone around for a change, just a lap or so, and it all came down to a bunch sprint. I was surprised that i was overtaking them so quickly (passed 4 in the sprint) and missed 1st by half a wheel.
