Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ed, to take this off topic for a bit. Do you know of or remember anything about Nathan Page track riding days in the early 90's? I think Junior world pursuit team?

Yeah, I know. It's usually a no-go zone for me too, but it was after 9pm, it was the quickest route home (l live near Mackers on Center and Warrigal), and it was just from Beach Rd. to South Rd

You're ideally placed to get to Glenvale on Sunday mornings, that's for sure.

I used to have to ride from Balwyn, Kew then Glen Iris....

Used to get pretty bloody dark riding home after VFL Park, with big Tom Leaper monstering the big dog and wanting to chat....

Jeez, Kew to VFL Park: that's a fair warmup

After VFL Park I used to try to get on a group going up North Rd. because I always forgot my lights.

One time I rocked up with lights and my plastic Zefal frame pump, and one of the old bastids naturally told me I could race with the stuff on my bike. As you can guess, I forgot it all after the race , and it wasn't the only time.

If I didn't work a 1/2 Tuesday, it was a trip over the mountain first, then race, then home. Cadel Evans could still ride away from everyone into that howling gale out there with 150km of goodness in his legs.

Impressive.

JEEZUZ!!! The trip from East Bentleigh to the race and back was a big enough for me.

I know of him. Former world junior pursuit champ and freak bike rider. Another one who hung the bike up before reaching his potential. Dave Sanders trained him for a short while in Victoria - must have been late 89 or very early 1990. Reckoned he was classy but a bit lazy. Can't remember if he was from QLD or NSW, think it was QLD.

He is riding again, I think he will be in the new caravello outfit they have launched. Looks like some good riders in that team now.

Only met him once....very briefly at the old Comm Bank Classic (he won it same year)....another NSW rider.

Rates himself EXTREMELY highly, IMO. He wouldn't have a job right now if he he wasn't mates with Robbie.

But he's way better than I ever was/will be so I have to respect that.

top right: the one running vaguely south-north from Mordialloc, then up, in between the 'a' on "St Kilda" and the "M1" sign.

Anyone got a decent cure for dry sore throat? Got Masters Crit Champs tomorrow and I can't rock up to the line with Cointreau on ice in hand
