BTW, do you ski? If yes, where? We go to Park City/Deer Valley every coupla years - we quite like Utah and it's probably one of the few places in the US we would actually consider living. And no, we aren't LDS ;)

We don't ski -yet. But we did go to Park City this weekend. We only moved here a little over a month ago. If you know where Provo Canyon exits on the Provo/Orem end, well, that's where we live. We're not LDS either.

Is LDS some code for Mormon?

HDTVKSS 04-17-06 09:26 PM

climbo 04-17-06 09:27 PM

pretty sad behaviour from them really.

Doesn't surprise me. I had a Jaguar/Rolls Royce business a few years back (why did I ever go near pommy cars? :crash: )
I had a sign in the workshop that said double labour rates if you wanted to watch... and I wrote underneath that 'or if you're a Jag club member'
Most of 'em only turned up after they'd really f****d something up... even then they'd still try and tell you how to fix it
Roller owners didn't interfere, just fought like hell over bills.
I'm glad to be away from the "Jag circus'.

Climbo - you just lost about 10,000 cred points.

You will have to buy a carbon and titanium Thylacine and equip it with carbon Record in order to regain some of those cred points. Either that or tell us that the purpose of the Volvo was to park it in a quarry and lob house size boulders at it :D

you guys see that "Helga" who won the women's keirin? "Crikey/strewth"

yeah, maybe :)

You guys getting Sopranos on free to air TV at the moment?

We haven't had it for 18 months!!!

62vette 04-17-06 09:48 PM

There are Sopranos reruns on at the moment on one of the channels - but at 11pm or something. All keen cyclists are in bed by then, or out drinking :)

I haven't seen a new series for ages

SWMBO's old man was in the enterainment industry (Vocalist/TV personality) and had a Rolls. Apparantly he was quite popular in the UK, so used to take an empty suitcase with him that he could pack with spare parts for the damn Rolls everytime he went over!

Also, have heard a rumour that Rolls owners had to sign a contract at sale specifying that it was never to be resprayed out of original colours, or Towed on a Tow Truck - tarnishing the image of the company. apparanrlty if you broke down you got a nice nondescript Rolls enclosed transporter that came and took your car away. anyone know if thats true?

far out, if jag owners dont like a 308 ( which is Australian by the way ;) ) they must really get their knickers in a knot when they are used as donor cars for hot rods, which is quite popular :D

There are a lot of Rolls-Royce myths out there, that's just another one (not that I've ever bought a new Rolls-Royce and since they don't exist anymore except as a name on a BMW I guess I will never have an oportunity now.) :D

The 308 may have been made in Australia, but surely it was an American design. (Edit: no you were right, I just did a search and it is an Australian design dating back to the project start in 1964. Did we design any other engines in Oz?)

Yeah the lovely Jag IRS does make a nice rear end for a rod, but it still looks better in a jag :)

was_bmxer 04-17-06 10:39 PM

I have heard the same thing about the rolls, if they break down. It gets quickly rushed off, hidden away or they cover it with curtains so no-one else can see it stranded.

I am shopping for a new family car right now. Have already spent way to much on cars.

My current car was $9K and is so much fun to use, wife spends at least 10 times that on the family mobile. I feel like smashing my head against a brick wall everytime I wash her car as I discover a new ding.

climbo 04-17-06 10:46 PM

wazza_bmxer, Volvo mate, 1988 model for $800, dings not a problem :)

You don't even have to try to be cool in it, being a dork is the way to go. Plus it matches my steel single speed retro mountain bike.

Odin 04-17-06 10:56 PM

I think the enclosed truck thing with Rollers was true at one stage in the UK, never saw it happen here.
I always liked how they said a Rolls Royce never breaks down...it fails to proceed :D

Jaguar had some cool stories way back, like the final design test for new models was that they were parked in Sir William Lyons (the boss) driveway to see how they looked in front of a mansion

Why do poms drink warm beer?

...Lucas fridges :roflmao:

Peugeot...Volvo same ****, different pile.

Best car I had was a 1.6 1985 vw golf, it was made in Germany, metalic quartz grey (brown) cost $3k and just kept going and going. Why someone privatley imported a base model mk2 golf into aust, I can't work out?

I like the earlier e-types with the shorter bonnets.
Expat I reckon the flat sixes in those cars are better - less weight and still a lot of power. In reality Im a fan of 4 cyclinders because you can run 'em hard and not kill yourself (to a point)
Could you imagine tuning all those carbys!!! take you all week!
two su in the dad's MG are hard enough

EDIT; picture now works

Hmmmm, I think the length is the same, but the earlier cars don't have the bulging headlights. The lights also don't work as well.

The series 2 cars also have a larger air intake, so they run cooler and that is important for us in oz.

The ugly e-types are the 2+2's and to a certain extent the series 3 cars (v12's), the long FHC is a mess with the fat bulbous roof compared to a S1 or S2 FHC.

Btw, Sir William Lyons always prefered the look of the FHC to the DHC and I agree.

And you still can't fit your road bike in the back.
