Been up since 4am, wish breakfast would open up down stairs, starving. Got to love the effects of jet lag.

Thinking of hring a bike and going for a ride around the city, they say it is a good way to see the place.

Oi! Is US$10 a good price for a Silca Pista pump? You guys were going on about them a while back, and Nashbar's got them for $10. How much do they go for out here?

~$80. USD10 + shipping could werk (sounds like about 50%-60% discount)

How'd the BMX race go last night? Climbo and Paul were too busy (read scared!) to come out and play in the Club Crit C'Ship. I had a little go for 30mins and it was spectacular fun. >41km avg and not just sitting in the middle of a pack either! A bit peeved that I didn't finish, but body isn't ready for the [CLUES FOR OPPONENTS LIKE CLIMBO HAVE BEEN CENSORED] just yet.

Cool. I bought 3, just in case. Why switch from Presta to Schrader when you can just have 1 pump for each. Oh, I should be racing in the next 2 weeks. Right now I just go out to watch, and bring a little box of BMX gear. I go home with a big wad of cash, so it's a nice night out. My wife catches up with her friends, and I catch up with mine. A very social/family event.

Sorry Muchie but at 41Km avg I would have been good for about 10m!

And I had to suffer the idignity of being caught swimming training for a tri!

:D

You don't really feel the pace when everything's just rolling along, in fact the racing is much cleaner than in the lower grades. It's the change of pace that occurs on the (numerous) little attacks that hurts if you're not conditioned right. More intervals for me I'm afraid :(

Quick question. Is 13.7kg's super heavy for a xc mountainbike with LX componenets suspension front and disk brakes?

Dun sound too bad. Expat (the walking MTB encyclopaedia) would be able to tell you straight off, but he's a workin ho like the rest of us now.

dbuckingham144 03-14-05 12:25 AM

So Expat you got the job by the sounds of it? congrats! looks like the forums will slow down now :-)

Was going to hire a bike this weekend for a bit of a blat around Amsterdam, but weather was way to cold! well for this Aussie anyway!

They drive on the right side of the road, needless to say a few times I have almost been run over, just habit looking to the left first and then walking out :(

Super heavy? No. But maybe a bit on the stout side. Is that a steel frame? As long as you have a decent (light) wheelset, that's not too bad. My tandem weighs 18kg, for comparison.

Yes, thanks. I notice this thread closes on the weekends.

badsac 03-14-05 01:08 AM

Thanks Munchie and Expat. Finally got some more infor out of the tight bastid. It's a Raceline enduro as found at the below site. Is that a crap bike for $1000?

Is this just for fun, or casual competition? I've never heard of Raceline (But I hadn't heard of Repco or Malvern Star until I moved here either) but they've done a fair job of speccing the bike, as I see a lot of good name brands. Nothing on there is really bottom of the range. Specialized makes a bike for $200 less with a cheap RST fork, and cheap 8 speed shifters. From what I've seen in my ebay sales, LX is a desirable upgrade from the plain Deore gear. The brakes are the low end of Hayes, but they're a reputable manufacturer, and that's certainly a step up from mechanical brakes. Rims and hubs are respectable as well. I'd say it's certainly not an entry level bike. Unless there's something evil about the frame that I don't know, should be a decent bike. I couldn't find a review for this particular model, but on www.mtbr.com/reviews it seems like their other products got mostly favorable reviews.

badsac 03-14-05 01:26 AM

Thanks heaps Expat. Yeah, my mate who's looking at this is going to be my partner in our adventure racing escapades, so it will be used for a bit of competition, although I don;t know how competitive the mountain biking generally is in adventure racing. Good to hear it's specced okay. I haven't a clue about mtb stuff anymore. But I'll give my mate the good news. Thanks again. :)

Good stuff. When did you start?

Brian 03-14-05 02:25 AM

Saccy, for what it's worth, that bikes a good starting point. There's better forks out there, but that one will serve you well. Throwing money at it will only save weight and give you smoother shifting. It's not really going to make it any more reliable, kind of like going from 105 to Ultegra. LX is to MTB as 105 is to road bikes. If you get a good deal on an XT rear derailleur, you're pretty much set.

Bucky, I started last Monday. They threw me to the lions today, but it was a slow day. Luckily it happens to be a job where I not only get paid, but I learn useful stuff.

The melbournites have been doin the Moomba thang (apparently it's a celebration of water: Yarra dogwater I'm guessin) so they have had very important things on their mind this weekend gone. Like beer, sleep, and panadol :)

blah, blah, blah, broken seattube, blah blah blah, cricket, blah blah blah, footy, blah blah blah, mountain biking, blah blah blah, bmx, blah blah blah, expat's new job. Forgive me if I've forgotten anything :D

Paul

PS There was, of course, copious amounts of obligatory road bike content.

rockmuncher 03-14-05 04:07 PM

It has quietened down a bit tho. It seems that ppl might have realised that weekends are for getting out and about, not sitting at an infernal computer :D

Or maybe they're just getting in some extra sleep before the live tour coverage begins for the first time this year! whoop. It's goinna be a tough coupla weeks.

climbo 03-14-05 04:24 PM

I have a proper excuse, I was in Vicco trying to hold 41km/h in a Tri bike leg, didn't work out too well.

when is this tri? you've been training all year, what are you waiting for? :)

bonesx 03-14-05 11:23 PM

hey all,

i was wondering what are some of your favourite/trustworthy on-line bike-shop sites. i'm melbourne based and am in the market for a new helmet. have done the rounds of my lbs (look after them, they mostly look after you), and was just interested in doing the on-line comparison.

does this count as bike content? cheers.
