Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Next Tuesday evening the NSW Cycling Federation is holding its Annual General Meeting at the Bankstown Sports Club. Now AGMs are not by nature rivetting attractions but this one promises to be a watershed event as all of the executive positions are open for re-election. Have a look at the Agenda to see the full extent of the spill. In particular the position of President will be decided, which is a pivotal role in guiding the future of cycling in our State and therefore directly affects us all. There are three candidates for the position: Bruce Mills, Phil Bates and a relative newcomer to NSW, Kerry Ruffles (we believe that's how he spells his name), perhaps better known as Sean Eadie's manager. These three will present their case for the top job and then there will be a vote by a show of hands. There is no proxy voting allowed so that to register a vote you will have to appear in person and produce your licence--and we urge you all to do just that as it's essential that we elect the right man for the job. The president elect could have a significant effect on whether Friday nite track, run by Paul Craft continues this winter.
See you all on Tuesday night?

No need for modesty, Berny. You earned it. Some day I'll be able to brag about finishing all 5 races without crashing. Or brag about placing higher than 4th, and it not being due to charity.

I would love to go but just started a new job and can't make it (of course I used to work in Sydney and could have gone up to last week but them's the breaks). Plenty of CC riders are going to go I hope, there are quite a few who said they would. Hopefully Paul get's Fridays back this year.

Ouch! Well I guess megastardom has its problems Truth is it wasn't a brilliant win. I got blown away by a junior on gear restrictions, and I truly mean BLOWN AWAY massive. I feel inadequate and dirty.

I might make it to Bankstown tomorrow night. Do I need several bodyguards or will I get by with just a can of mace? Or am I thinking of a different part of town?

Anti-recommendation: Heinz FAKE TOM YUM soup. It's diabolical, and even half a canister of salt didn't improve the taste. I have to go and be violently ill now.

Oh yeah, and South Park is on.

Thankyou for your streling words of encouragement, but I am baching it ATM. I guess next time I might attempt to heat it up using that thing in the room where the dishes are kept.

I can imagine that the pressure at that level would be self compounding if your mental strength was even slightly less than what it should be.

Here's an idea. Why not turn the playstation off, buy a real bike, and go outside for ride?

The words "mental" and "Frank Vandenbroucke" are too often in the same sentence....

Bikes: Pinarello Sestriere (steel) with Veloce 10 speed & Campagnolo Shamal Ultra wheelset, De Rosa Vision (Alu) with Chorus 11 and Campagnolo Bora One 50 wheelset Bianchi 1885 with Centaur groupset and Zonda wheelset 2003 GT Avalanche 0.0 MTB

I think I've read something on this before but will ask again.

What is the highest Heart rate you guy's have reached on a ride?
I hit 225 the other day when my max should be 185. It was after a 90km ride and I did a short sprint finish from Bay street to North Road into a headwind last Sat Morning.

Discounting things like trams, high-tension wires and radios that send my Polar mental....highest I ever saw was 216 in a track race at Blackburn once. I hit out from 3 to go and was creeping with 1/2 a lap to go. Also hit 216bpm and 450 watts for about 20 seconds in a threshold test when I was about 20.

Hmmm sounds like it would still be to much effort for most of the moon tanned nerds out there.

if youve done the 220 - your age method of determining your Max HR, its only accurate for a small percentage of the population. ive hit 205 ( that ive seen ) a few times, which is about 11 points higher than the mathematical equation would have me believe is possible.

196 is my highest, recorded as I crossed the line for my first ever race win in a crit a few weeks ago. At 39 my theoretical HRmax is about 185 too, but I do 10min climbs at 187 then the boss calls for 190 near the top!

As for 225, you might wanna validate that. If you can download the data and graph it you will see one of two things:
* a vertical line at the point where your HR reaches 225, indicating HRM malfunction
* a non-vertical line increasing rapidly to 225, indicating the need to see a cardio specialist sometime soon

There's a bit of info amongst the crap at https://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycling/98578-high-hr-max-ouch.html, more at the Polar site https://support.polar.fi/PKBSupport.n...1?OpenDocument

I asked the question becasue I was not sure if my HRM was playing up or if it could be possible. It would only have been at that rate for a few seconds and I felt like puking when I stopped at North Road! My previous highest was 192 (again for a few seconds only).

I wouldn't pedal that hard if it was going downhill, do they even get how to ride a bike ??

Ride outside? What with all the traffic, muggings, bad air, bugs, other people in the way, of course they wouldn't
