Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes and no. Yes, but he bailed. Back to three again.

No friends? Or no friends who bike.

Oh and high end meaning XT.

no friends that ride. I am getting to know the local club and racer guys but they are all pretty much 40+. My wife tries to bike but she is afraid of the road and has trouble on the mtb (she has both) she threw up the last two times we went out. She is a runner so she is used to a constant output, mtb is a bit too much on/off for her. I should probably slow down too.

Ah okay. If you're interested in the race maybe we can figure something out.

So far its me (17) a friend (will be 18) and a coworker (32 or 34, forget).

Don't know your age but hopefully the coworker will make it seem less weird. He's an incredibly strong rider.

I have a trek 6500

https://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/B...6500&Type=bike

While I am very happy with it all I always love upgrades

But seriously poor razor needs them more than anyone else on here I am sure.

I need to try another mtb race this year, there are hardly any around here, but I did one 2 years ago before i started really training on the road. Fitness was a big issue but it was a ton of fun. At my current level I think I could be at least a little competative. Of course I would risk my reputation 2 years ago I was mtbing alot and advised that while the roadies that come out to race XC have a good engine they don't actually know how to ride and I would make up time on technical parts, now I fear I may have crossed to the dark side and have become that roadie.

I'm a roadie and proud. That's a nice bike you have man! Mine is a custom build from the ground up, I'm happy with it. Rode the trails a few hours yesterday, really muddy. Trails I've not been on before. Then we got lost on some highway, that was bad.

I don't know about all that, but Martha's Home Depot furniture is going to look nice on my newly repaired and stained back deck. The guy comes to power wash and stain the deck this week.

Oh boy. I just watched a PBS documentary about the Mai Lai Massacre in Viet Nam in 1968. Nothing underscores the fog of war more than a failure of military intelligence that turns well intentioned American ground infantry like the burned out men of Charlie Company into a horror similar to SS in Russia in 1941. Sweet Jesus what a clusterfark.

Maybe all the friggin screaming imbeciles who are so rah-rah about military adventures should be compelled to watch this PBS documentary the next time we're debating sending Americans into war. Because they're all the same. Similar tragedies occur in every friggin stupid skull farked war. Women, babies and old men slaughtered by mistake. And after watching this, you do feel that it was a combination of military intelligence eff up and the madness of war. In the end you can't control war, it's madness that always runs amok. God help us war is so effing stupid and usually pointless.

Now you idiots can move this whole stupid effing thread to P&R. Knock yourselves out. Like I give a crap. Of course, I don't particularly feel anything I've written here is particularly debatable or controversial if you have brain cells between your friggin ears.

so is doomstock ready?

Mzeffex. if you get desperate let me know. I don't want to intrude, but if you really need a guy I may be interested, any info would be needed though. And I would need lighting.

What is the super light that everyone talked about like 3 months ago for under a 100 bucks?

Haha it's not intruding. Magic shine is the one, $85, 900 lumens. That's what I'll be using.

And pcad, you seem to be pretty into historical TV shows huh?

Those who do not learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it.

Which pretty much sums up the American Experience, which ironically, is the name of the show I was watching.

I often feel the military isn't getting any less civilians killed as time goes on, they just get better at making sure it is the other sides civilians.

1 death is obviously too many, but I am amazed at the ratio of American:"bad guy" deaths and casualty rates in this modern time. It costs a few trillion $$$ more, but it seems slightly less meat grinderish even compared to 40 years ago.

Don't worry. Getting laid isn't that hard. Hell, I get laid once a month whether I need or not. One of the advantages of married life.

Coincidentally, I watched the same thing, which is notable because I don't watch that much PBS. It's also a testimony to the quality of other TV programming.

Anyway, it helps when you spell your atrocities correctly: My Lai.

Awesome how the one guy convicted was soon released due to public pressure. I guess the pictures of dead babies in the ditch really didn't bother people that much.

In a few years there will be plenty of documentaries about the madness going on in Iraq and Afghanistan, it really is a shame that so many people have to suffer needlessly.

Was this mentioned in the program? I didn't see the entire thing:

Three U.S. servicemen who made an effort to halt the massacre and protect the wounded were denounced by U.S. Congressmen, received hate mail and death threats and found mutilated animals on their doorsteps.[5] Only 30 years after the event were their efforts honored.[6]
That's awesome too.
