Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you die or have serious neurological damage it will spoil it for me. On the other hand if you wind up brain dead, you'll still be able to participate on this thread.

Then I'd have to sign my iPad and give it away to the first person who comes to the Book Signing, which would probably be coasting.

I used to love Heathrow as a kid. It had the Oasis Lounge - a veritable cornucopia of free food and alcohol for a high schooler. I think it was only for British Airways passengers. The layovers were awesome.

Gatwick sucked.

Oh I'm sure Heathrow is even more fun than Newark. I can't hardly wait. What a great way to end a vacation in drab Greece, @ exciting Heathrow.

Hey Pcad,

Are you downloading books on the iPad? Or are you still a hard copy reader?

Is this where you tell us how much climbing you're going to do in Greece?

More importantly, which bike are you bringing?

I'm bringing the Scott. My climbing in Greece is limited to the size of the mountain road climbs there, but generally it's 6-7 miles each way up over the mountain pass both ways every day, plus some other climbing. It's a lot of steady climbing, and the roads are great. I figure in my last two trips there (2006, 2008) I probably did at least 500 miles on the local roads each time, so I'm very familiar with them.

Your million vertical feet thread is a bust. In that one picture, did you tuck your yellow jacket into your tights?

Very cool. Riding in Italy is next on the list. Bringing the bike seems problematic. What carrier do you use?

20 year old soft case. Works great. The newer soft cases you can buy now are better still. Hard cases suck for several reasons.

Explain. I didn't think you had a choice. I assumed your bike gets trashed in a soft case during international travel.

For such a light bike frame, Cavendish's Addict handled that harrowing crash rather well the other day. In fact, none of the carbon bikes involved in that crash shattered into pieces. Some may have become damaged enough to require a replacement, but none snapped in two. The designers and manufacturers are obviously getting better at producing these carbon wonderbikes.

They do need to get a handle on the wheel situation though. That's embarrassing watching those things crumble under stress.

Have I wasted this observation in here?

Just get one of these. In the unlikely event that my 20 year old case gets trashed, that's what I will replace it with. However my extensive travels with my old Athlon Products case assures me that it's indestructible. Better than a hard case: easier to squeeze into small foreign rental cars or taxis and easier to strap to the roof (I bring compression straps) if you are forced to do that. Protects the bike just fine. Trust me on this, I've traveled all over the friggin place with a case like that.
