Well, I got tired before I got to the blacking out stage while looking for my max heart, but I got it to 185. That can't be too far off, as the rule of thumb says I should be at 174. I ride my junk miles at around 165-175, but I'm not getting much faster. My shopping heart rate is about 65.

So we're cruising along on the Nyack Ride on a high speed section, not going too hard, and the guy next to me has a Scott Addict. I ask him if he likes it. He loves the bike. It was a recent crash replacement frame from Scott and he had upgraded it to Di2. He also liked the Di2.

Today I noticed something about my riding. I am pretty fast on the flats. I saw a local team on their training ride, about 15 of them. We were on a very long fast road and it was pretty flat, a few humps but no hills. It was such a long and straight stretch you could see miles ahead and could put your head down and pedal as hard as you want for a good 15 to 20 mins. I reeled them in and the shot past them. It took about 10 mins but I did it. Unfortunately the road ends with a really nasty steep hill and they all came zooming past me.

I did intervals today... how delightful.

Just I was really getting into it (aka really, really hating it), I flatted. Spent the next hour or so replacing and then patching tubes. Finally got the thing to hold air on the fifth attempt just before the rain started.

It was a cleansing experience.

I didn't make it clear. I wasn't going 25, I was going 0 and fell. I was kidding about the 25.

Herbie53 06-13-10 05:09 PM

anybody watch Whale Wars?

I think whaling is stupid, but Paul Watson's incompetence and willingness to put idealistic kids lives in danger is truly disgusting.

My rear shifter is messed up now.

Sometimes it's noisy. Sometimes when I click it doesn't change gears. Sometimes it changes gears on its own.

Last time I was in the shop (before it really started getting bad) the guy mentioned replacing cables housing. And it's true--I've had them several years.

But is that a likely explanation for the dérailleur woes? Or is it something else?

I feel like I'm cruising on a wounded duck.

Whenever I warn the cycling world that they are in Big Trouble, it actually turns out that I am the one in Big Trouble.

That sucks.

I am profoundly over my head in this sport. It's like when I snorkeled in the choppy Mediterranean on windy days in my youth, and I kept getting mouthfuls of Greek sea water instead of air.

I once swam up to an octopus sitting on a rock, put my speargun to his stupid fish head, and shot him like a Viet Cong prisoner. We ate him for dinner.

Just sayin'.

Is this a nifty way of saying your day will come, or did you fall off and hit your head again?

Cable housing, or some other friction point, like where it runs under the BB. Sometimes a simple re-lubrication does the trick.

My day won't ever come, and I don't have to hit my head again.

I did spray WD-40 where I could. Apparently that'd not enough. It seems the dérailleur positioning is shifting (around) or slipping, if that makes sense.

Perhaps, but you will never stop trying.

is the bolt that holds the derailleur on the hanger tight? removable hanger lose? If you have had the wheel off recently sometimes things can move around or if you didn't get the quick release tight things may still be moving.

Just some other stuff to try. It sounds like some fresh cables are needed in any case.
