Hey everyone.. looking into buying a CAAD April 16th 'ish but had a few concerns/questions. Please forgive me if my post has been considered elsewhere, I've read nearly half of this thread and haven't really seen anyone address this.. Anyone concerned w/the quality or manufacturing of the famous, American-made Cannondale Aluminum frames being off-shored?? I'm considering finding a CAAD 9 from last year but the sucker in me wants to "keep up with the Jones's" and go for the new shiny 10. Is our CAAD now just another aluminum bike being produced offshore yet still aiming to maintain the higher price point?? I'm new to the sport so forgive my naivete. I suppose I'll do some research regarding the hydroforming process, or whatever it is.

FYI, I'm well aware of the manufacturing of carbon frames being overseas unless you dump out the $5k for an OCLV or the like; however, regarding aluminum, I just always assumed that Cannondale's USA product was far superior.

Have things really changed as much as I assume??

Thanks in advance!

Very good question.

Firstly, there is no doubt that the American made CAAD is an excellently built/manufactured machine.
But, so far, up until this point, with 1/4 of a year of production, we've yet to hear of any Asian built CAAD10 failures.
To the contrary. I'm only hearing good things about the CAAD10 (which gives me comfort).

From what has been written here at least by those who've experienced both, the CAAD10 is incrementally better than the CAAD9.
I personally think it comes down to styling. Does one prefer the modern look of the CAAD10? Or the classic look of the CAAD9?
Whichever one chooses, they are both still CAAD's still developed by the same company with the same techies sweating the details.

Either way, you'll be getting one of the best aluminum frames ever made. Ever.
As much as I LOVE my CAAD9 and went with it precisely because of it's classic design,
I'd have no qualms about getting a CAAD10. They (IMO) are gorgeous.

However, I doubt I ever will get one because the CAAD9 just does "it" for me. There's no need for me to graduate to a CAAD10.
I'd have to get a Carbon bike (like a SuperSix HiMod) to do significantly better than my CAAD9 "as-built".

The CAAD9's are getting harder and harder to come by. If you can get one exactly how you want one and prefer it, get it.
If not, go right on ahead and pick up that CAAD10 with full confidence. So far, it seems to be carrying on the CAAD tradition just fine.

Good luck with whatever you choose and be sure to let us know.

DUDE!! Were you on a bike at 425? That's friggin great. On a bike at 345 is impressive enough. You seriously need to post some before and after pics when you are done.

Stick with it! It took serious illness for my father to get on the path to better health in that regard. He chose rowing.

Started on a Bike E recumbent. Mostly I did a lot of walking and eating better (obviously...) My profile pic is me finishing a 4 mile run/walk last fall. I was a collegiate athlete (basketball) and after 2 fairly serious knee injuries (one while doing heavy squats) I completely quit exercising for about 15 years - and eating like crap. I have a long way to go, obviously, but I'm getting there and this bike is going to be part of my progress. I'm planning on doing my first triathlon in June, a Sprint distance. Running still hurts my knees so I'll be walking a lot of the run portion. Thanks for the encouraging words! I spend most of my time in the Clyde sub-forum.

Although I really like the 10's lines, this 9 is a very tidy package. Well done.

Hang in there brother. Before you know it, you'll be squealing like a kid blasting down the road on that thing. Hold fast.

thank you, haven't really changed too much though. the 9-4 was a great starting block.

Okay, after reading all this I have to say, I want one.

Got mine up and running. CAAD9-6. Replace the stock 500's with some old Velomax wheels I've had for a while. I was coming off an old Bridgestone RB-1, which handled well, doesn't match to the stiffness and handling of the CAAD9. There. I said it. The CAAD feels, lighter, and although it does fatigue me a little, it's no big thing.

BUT... I am very annoyed, and thus ask for advice. I made the idiotic move of trying to replace the bottle cage with a cheapo plastic profile cage[don't ask why]. I crossthreaded the top bolt, and it loosened the fastener/nut from the frame! What do I do? I was thinking I could use super glue to fasten the nut to the frame, but that seems unbelievably cheesy. Is my beautiful frame ruined? I'm planning to take it to the shop, but the whole thing is just so embarrassing.

You might want to consider changing the location of your sensor to get a better signal. I know that at least Strada uses the position you're using in its manual, but it does not place the sensor directly under the computer for the CAAD and is not the best location for the strongest signal.

Thanks for the tip, I'll consider it if it starts acting up. I'm assuming it should be on the nds facing forward?

Yes, just like the position on the bike in post #1183 above.

Even so, the colors on the toupe and the bar tape set it off nicely.

Ditto.
If you check out my "The Cabin Fever Thread..." here, you'll see how it got to me too.
Now, I'm trying to take advantage of all the good days I can.
I can't wait until those hot sweaty days to come back so I can pound the pavement.

So finally get to ride it after buying it for almost two months and only being able to look at it and see the reviews of how great it is, but never being able to ride it.

It was raining in the SF Bay Area the last few weeks, so had to wait the dreadful wait. Was so scared that this week was going to rain also, but the rain finally stopped and the sun came out. Which is absolutely perfect since it's my vacation from work and spring break from school. (: Some times, although seemingly seldom, things do go my way.

My first road bike. So far I love the bike. Tell me what upgrades I should do next. Thanks.
