Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Something like this. I am not fussed the grams. This is not a weight weenie frame, probably be 16 or a bit more built.

I like how these guys write.

No doubt he averages 23 mph on Cat 3 climbs.

It's comical that you say that about weight, then proceed to write another long paragraph about weight. In fact it was you who brought up bike weight to begin with. My only point was about rider build.

I wouldn't worry about it either. You won't feel 30g in your seat clamp.

Today I just did recovery pace over rolling terrain, at like 17.5mph. Yesterday I rode 90miles starting out with hill repeats, then a group ride in which I was being conservative being a long day, and I averaged right at 20mph, and climbed 3000ft for the day. A loop I train a lot on has 1500ft of climbing in 28 miles, and lately I have been averaging over 20mph riding solo on it. Not all rides are races, and it just depends how I feel that day.
I'm thinking it's probably not as hilly there as it is here... I can average about 18mph on the flattest ground I can find around here. 20 miles/800 ft elevation.

That's the ride I did today and averaged like 14.5 lol

It depends. If I wanted to, I am sure I could find a route to do 3000ft of climbing in 20miles. In converse, I could probably find a route similar to your 800ft in 20miles. It just depends what roads you turn down. None of the hills here are very big 400-500ft each, but they are plentiful, and some peak out in the upper 20% range.

I did a lot of racing in SA's neighborhood. You would be amazed at how flat some of those races were. I also did a bunch of races in his area where I would beg for some flat ground. The climbs around him aren't necessarily long but they can certainly make your guads scream for mercy. The race that will always stick out in my mind is the Hocking Hills race. If the course wasn't bad enough all of us decided to get completely lost and do some bonus climbs. Good times......

I had the pleasure of going to Moab, UT to ride mountain bikes for about a week. Everyone should go there at least once in their life.

Yeah that's pretty much how it is. These flat crit races are new to me. I train a lot in the Mohican area, where it is similar to the Hocking Hills area. I did a cancer fundraiser ride a few years back from OSU to OU, and it was 104 miles some of which stretched through Hocking Hills. Some of those climbs were viscous, and I was glad I was prepared for them. My flatland friend from Columbus was not so prepared. I had to practically drag him to Athens after the Hocking section.

SA I love visitors so if you are ever over here we should go for a ride. As long as you promise not to crush my soul.

Also, guess who has lost 12lbs since he started cycling?

I'd have to lose too much muscle to be in the not-too-fat for this sport category, but 185 is what I weighed at the very peak of my physical and athletic physique. 9 more lbs. 195 WAS my goal but apparently I have lost more muscle than I realized in the past 5 years because I don't look great still.

Anyway, thought I'd share. It feels good to hit milestones.

Rough crowd today.

It is an emergency notification system that will start in NY and then be rolled out to the rest of the country. Given the severity of flooding and other natural disasters in recent memory it will certainly be used for more than defense purposes. Time will tell but it quite likely to be a tool picked up by someone if the federal government does not utilize it for that purpose.

We had an air raid siren in the neighborhood when I lived in Jersey. They tested it every Saturday at noon, IIRC.

At least we always figured it was an old air raid siren.

Right on. I would love to visit you one day. Also a lot of this has to do with your body type, and what kind of riding you do. Some people just ride to enjoy the outdoors, and have fun. That's fine if that's what your into. I think Gomer probably falls into this category. Some of the people I ride with fall into that category as well. Ever since I first got on a bicycle, I always wanted to go faster. So when I started riding road bikes, I was hooked, and that's all I wanted to do. The weight started coming off instantly. I was usually around 170 or so before cycling, but then I became a lazy salesman for awhile, and got up in the 180s. I am 5'10" and as of this morning 153lbs. If I was taller obviously I would weigh more. Some top sprinters are bigger fellows, and up around your weight. I think Thor Hushovd for example is 6'1" 175lbs or something like that. One of the guys I raced against this weekend had to be over 200lbs, but he sure moved it around well. I had to go around him in the final sprint, and it was no easy chore. Congrats on the milestone BTW. Good job!

This one is for Makel, but I am sure the other dog lovers will enjoy it. Took the puppy for his longest walk yet so far yesterday 5 miles. He was so pooped he just sat around the house for the next 5 or 6 hour afterward. Bentley is only 7mo old, but my is he getting big.

VV, when you manage to get a picture taken that doesn't certify your gomer status I will play. Fair enough.

SA you do realize that you use some very hot keywords on a regular basis that there is a high probability automatically get fed into some federal computer database to be analyzed. I just bet you are a blast to fly with.
