Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rode to Lithgow the alternative way, via OConnell and Tarana yesterday. Crazy hot day with a northerlie gale blowing. Great ride the 30km to oconnell as it's mostly all flat or slightly downhill. Averaged 36 for that 30km. After that was when the pain started. Went that way because I thought it wouldn't have as many long hills. Well yeah done are as long, but there's more of them and steeper. Was either coasting or pushing up bloody steep climbs in the lowest gear. Thought I was going to get heat stroke at one stage. I broke my all time bike top speed record though. Near the end there's a hill going down to Lake Lyall near Lithgow. Been down there before on a motorbike and didn;t pay much attention to it, other that it had a shocking surface, with it all being decades of roadfill. Anyway, get passed by a motorbike up the top. Start heading down and things get very scary very quick. I knew I was doing a fair clip, but I was more worried about my plastic bike not folding up underneath me. It was so bumpy I couldn't reach the brakes. Down the bottom, I got passed by another motorbike (the first ones mate I guess). He must have been following me down to see how I went. It must have been as impressive looking as it was scary for me, as he gave me the thumbs up as he went past. Final speed? 97.8 km/h. Would have been way over 100 if the road was smooth. Maybe I'll complain to Lithgow council that it's dangerous, get them to put down some hot mix, and do it again.

Hey, about bumps/holes and my bike. Everytime I go over one bigger than a 50 piece it seem to slow my bike noticably, like I had a stab at the brakes. I've never had this on any bikes before. Is this a common thing for roadbikes?

Oh yeah. Not a bad effort by Pidge either. Shame I was riding at the time, so missed it.

Is that what happened? There was nothing mentioned about another vehicle in the two reports in the local rag this morning. Wouldn't surprise me though.

Well, if it's the same incident, that's what they were saying on the TV last night. Or maybe I was still suffering form heat stroke.

Pidge'll play till he's 50.

Geez, they were bagging boof on ABC radio yesterday. Said he's got nothing against pace, and should be pissed off immediately. Can't say I disagree with them.

I seem to remember him saving our bacon once or twice on a recent tour of SA against ferocious pace on dodgey wickets.

Did you follow thru on those Neuvation wheels? I'm still interested in them as they look like they could be a reasonable training wheel for the price.
I'll email you about the tubes. As far as the wheels go, I'll be taking orders before we head over there next year.

Poor old bugger was almost on a walking stick in the last series. So slow even Lee could hit him for sixes. His fast days were well behind him by then.

Brett Lee....in the wilderness.

Expect Mick Lewis or Shaun Tait to leapfrog him for Test selection.

That's the one, P-plater went over the double yellow around a bend, took one of the two bikers out who were coming around the bend. Not sure about the other bloke, I think he fell off but was OK.

Apart from that, sounds like a nice ride 'muncher, I'm keen to give it a go soon. On another note, I did the track racing at Adcock last week, going again Wed night, it's great fun. Do you have a track bike?

Yeah, Lee's in the wilderness because he can't get a friggin game. It's rediculous. After what the selectors are putting him through there's no way another paceman's going to get a run ahead of him though.

Who the fark is Mick Lewis? How can he be in the frame for test selection when nobody's heard of him, or talking about him? Must be a bloody Victorian.

Not yet. My next puchase will be an el cheapo road bike to race on during the winter road season. I'll convert the old crate into a fix/free (best of both worlds) cruiser at some point to get used to riding fixed. Then I'll buy a track bike and pretend to race whenever next year's season starts. Mebee Thylo can cook somethin up for me once he comes across to the dark side (al).

I might drop down for a gander on Wed. I have to pay my CA fees so I have a reasonable excuse

I suppose we'd have gotten booted from a cricket forum if there was one.

Like Hitchy said, if you guys who talked cricket all the time simply put something like:

"Maybe if he rode a road bike, he'd improve his averages".

Or "He hit the ball so far out of the ground, they had to put the groundskeeper on a road bike to go find it."

Then maybe we should just start a cricket thread.

Nope. I find my ADHD is incompatible with a game that moves that slow. And I just don't get it. My wife used to play indoor cricket (and now she rides bikes, so yeah, I not only stole one of your wimmin, but a good one!) and she's tried to explain it to me, but I do my best Homer Simpson "Boring!" and nod off anyway.

Ahhh... now you've got to the secret part. Proclaim yoursefl as a cricket fan, and place yourself firmly in the most comfy chair you can find in front of the TV. Then you can get away with myriad sins. Need sleep? Dodge off for a bit. Need a drink? Pull the tab on a tinnie. Need some privacy and space from the missus? Turn up the volume, or start yelling loudly with delight at even the most ineffective shot/ball/fielding, and she'll disappear quicksmart.
