Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: 1 trek, serotta, rih, de Reus, Pogliaghi and finally a Zieleman! and got a DeRosa

Don.d

For me (and I really can't talk for anyone else) his earlier bikes
had more appeal. Were they significantly better than say De Rosa? nope
for the most part they were pretty much the same (have I contradicted
myself more than twice now?). I think the big difference was that Ernesto
was much better at marketing his marque than the others. Given the
association with the pro peloton and it was more akin to Trek/Lance
than true innovation (back "in the day"). For me a Pogliaghi has more
cache, but again thats personal preferrence.
I don't think that being different has anything to do with cache, its more
the ride, not the brazing, not the file marks.
Given that Ernesto probably spec'd tubulars I'd say he didn't talc. . .
and thats as far as I'm going on that one.

Marty

Bikes: Thylacines...only Thylacines.

If you ignore the geometry, the euro-trash paint jobs, and the sloppy finish work, Colnagos are excellent bikes! They're even better if you talc your arse and pull your Assos bibs on. Then you're getting the true Italian experience. ( Don't forget to push your seat all the way back, too.)

seat waaaaay back, A foot of carbon seatpost hanging out of the frame, 14cm stem jammed down on the head tube and shorts and sleeves rolled up, Mario-style.

Now you're cool...

It's less a case of not answering, and more a case of requiring approximately three lifetimes to understand WTF the question was. I have aherd of cattle working on a solution as we speak.

Ok. Did I not make myself clear enough when I ordered/they were stoopid, or were they having an anti-seppo day? Sometimes I can't tell.

Oh that. No they were just extremely deficient in brainpower. Collectively they could summon the wit and wisdom of a stillborn hamster

Oh yeah, welcome home Wattsy. Did you end up finding a job?
Nope, still looking. Had about 10 interviews, but no one is recognising my huge talents.

I went through a long period of "no one loves me" too a few years back. It wasn't pretty for me or my family, but it was the same for thousands of us who all got caught in the IT jobmarket crash. My problem was that I didn't have a Plan B, and it almost ended in tears.

Keep knockin' on those doors, and always with a smile on your face

Yes and no. Technically I'm not in the PS, rather a consultant (read scum), but I'm back in the same place that I used to work when I was in the PS.

WTF? How do you get sacked from the public service? I've never heard of such a thing!

One does not get sacked from the Public Service. One becomes a contractor, then returns to the scene of the crime some time later earning roughly twice the salary for the same work. Only then can you be sacked, or be requested to become a public servant. I don't see the difference really.

Eh? So your long period of "no one loves me" was bought about by your good self trying to screw the tax payer for more money as a contractor? Fair enough I guess.

Good work if you can get it. Being an imported worker, I know where the good wages are, which is why I'm looking for gov't jobs. Although some utilities seem to be paying well too.

No, it was brought about by a dramataic and sudden downturn in the number of available jobs in my field. As for screwing the tax payer, I can only say that self-interest far outways any moral atttitudes that I might have harboured when I was younger. In the words of the hooker, "you have to be prepared to screw anyone to make a decent buck".

I still don't get why you were unemployed. Because you were sacked by the public service (unheard of), or you thought contracting would be safer (crazy). Help a simple public servant out.

Saccy, I had been contracting for many years. PS life was only a distant memory. After I left the PS in 1998 I contracted to GEIS for a short while, then helped to relocate the ASX, then helped to relocate Citigroup, then the shit hit the fan.

Why would they be selling it?

Have they changed brands?

And I've asked this before, but who gets the money?

-To get their money back

-Yes....Lotto-Domo is now Davitamon-Lotto. Merckx's flogged off, new Ridleys ordered.

-Depends....if Robbie was given the bike by the team or bought it (for a nominal sum) to train on back in Oz, then he gets the money. If it's still a team asset, the funds go back to the them. Every big team has a service course somewhere in Europe you can buy end-of-year kit from.
