Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Give Pshaw credit for swallowing his vomit rather than spraying it on the little BMXer.

I used to throw up when they hammered it off the line. I'd retire to the back of the group and let her rip. But then I thought "stuff them" and didn't bother going to the back anymore. A few races later the pace was a little more to my liking and it stayed that way for the rest of the season. Can't figure out why. Maybe they all got tired.

Just got back from watching BMX practice. I'm hooked. 24" wheels, 1 brake, 1 gear. You can get a race-ready bike for under $500. Just like road biking, right?

Nope. Masters is 30+. Although at gate practice the oldies line up with the little guys and get absolutely spanked.

There are guys that race the 20 inchers, but I outgrew that many years ago. You can almost pedal a 24" sitting down, but it feels silly. Stunts? Bar spins? Jumps? Once again, it's the Master's class, so gravity will pretty much keep most of us from ever leaving the ground for anything more than the briefest of moments. Beside, I'm what's called a leaner. I fall over to the side as soon as I catch air. But the missus will take photos, and any that allow me to show a bit of dignity will certainly be shared.

I think you guys had better ease up on the BMX chatter. We don't want the Aussie Thread to get relocated to somewhere even more obscure than FOO

Might be up for an early Saturday ride, like 6am early. Sunday I'm out.

And yes, there was a wicked head wind in the home straight last night.

I'll be sure to put in lots of road miles for BMX training. How's that?

If you need a bit of road talk, I did the last of the Taroona TT series on Tuesday night. Took 2 minutes off my PB. Amazing what a little tail wind (and actually training) can do
I also had a group ride that is supposed to be an easy spin last night. Thought that would be a perfect recovery. Should have known some of the fast guys would hijack the ride. The last half we seemed to be hitting 45km/h on the flats quite regularly I guess I'll just have to keep training so it doesn't feel like so much work when that happens.

I need some decent tyres for racing. I'm after solutions for both dry and wet weather racing. Looking for clincher tyres that are as light and strong as possible, offer good grip and low rolling resistance. Any suggestions?

? I ride sew-ups but Michelin Pro Race seem to always get good wraps from the clincher side. Pro Race is super light, all that Silica stuff built in to it for grip etc.

I have a box of 20 samples of the new Tioga ProLine SF tires back at the office. 200g, 23c, slick down the middle, grippy on the sides, all black. Hopefully I won't have to use all 20 of them for this current project.

I've just come off the ironic Hutchinson Fusion Long distance. I dunno what a 'long distance' is in France, but I only got 2500kms out of the back one. It looks like it's gone to hell and back...huge chunks taken out of it.....flat as a tack in the middle.....not pretty.

On a tangent, I just put a set of Michelin Carbons on my bike, 1x80KM ride and they have microcuts all over them, being a newby I was about to take them back to the shop until a fellow cyclist told me I had probably ridden over some road debris..?

Any thoughts? Bit dissapointed if that is the case as they get a good rap as a commuter tyre..

I bought some Tioga gloves and they fell apart so quickly that I've sworn off any of their products for life. I need a certain amount of quality between me and the road, and there's no way I'd trust Tioga tyres after seeing how shoddy their handiwork is on another of their products.

I would say that the little cuts are normal, especially if you're riding on roads around the central coast. The councils have a habit of neglecting to sweep the verges on any of the arterial roads, so you get all manner of crap there. The little cuts shouldn't pose a problem, but if you're worried about puncturing you could grab a pair of tyre liner inserts (~$15 at your LBS). They don't weigh much and they might stop the odd puncture.

Dunno yet saccy. From what I've read on various reviews they're a preety neat dry weather race tyre. I'm just looking for ideas from my seasoned/hardcore Aussie Thread colleagues first. Then I'll try a few out.
