Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm assuming that's the black and yellow on white System U top? I have the same one from about 1987. No attachment to it anymore, you'll see it on ebay soon.

That's the one. Laurent Fignon and Charly Mottet were my heroes......every other kid had a poster of Wayne Johnson or Tim Watson on their school locker. I had Fignon, Roche and Criquelion.

Bikes: Thylacines...only Thylacines.

What to eat before riding is the age old question that even Ric Stern can't answer. I usually go at least an hour after eating, and usually eat something simple like some leftover pasta or if it's a morning ride, a regular breakkie is usually okay.

No matter what you eat though, when you're pushing it and burp a bit up, it's NEVER good.

You guys and your nostalgia trip makes me wanna buy a copy of the 1988 TdF, the one where Lemond wins by 6 seconds or whatever. That was my kinda first big intro into road cycling.

We should have a DVD night. Who has the biggest Lounge Room and best home theatre system?

What makes it difficult is not always knowing how hard you're gunna ride. Absolute maximum efforts make all the difference

?
I can't believe I gave away my yellow Del Tongo top years ago. They now hang them up in the "museum" sections of some shops.

I thought about the fixey thing when I posted that message: I can't imagine the hippy types buying a shiny new frame.

1988......Delgado. Nearly lost it to a doping scandal.....Steve Rooks said he would go to Perico's place and hand over the yellow jersey after the Tour if he won.

Pretty cool.

How did you guys go eating before a race?

I could not eat anything within at LEAST 4 or 5 hours before a race, or I would almost bring it up, and I could definitely not eat anything on a Sunday morning before a 10am race......or was it 9:30?

If I ate all the stuff that this guys says, I would choke on my spew, and die -- so I'm thinking of "going" him.
I eat nothing before a 9am race too, it's way too soon, drink sports drinks before and eat after, it seems to do OK for me but I know some guys who shovel down PB&J sambos as they get to the line, weird, I never could do that.

You done the ride back to Gosford yet? I keep getting drawn towards the Anglers Rest at Brooklyn. I just can't work it out

One Sat night I got home so late that I slept in all my gear, including my shoes!!

Then: BANG!!! Alarm....straight on the bike. Nothing like riding up North Road while scooping the "muesli" out of your eyes
That's pretty nasty, man... Did you manage to have milk with that muesli?

8000 starters and ability to organise only 3000. I'd hate to be BV boss Harry Barber having to sign all those refund cheques.

Oh well <shrug> There's always the Great Tasmanian Bike Ride BV runs coming up in Feb. More fun and game, s'pose.
I know 3 people who did it and thought the ride was unreal! Although one said the queue for food went forever as did the one for showers. Oh yeah and those bike were a joke....but apparently some people actually did the ride with them....how brave!!

not yet, waiting until I know I can make it without dying. Only been back on the bike 2 months, maybe January, holidays coming up now so not much riding time until the New Year, it'll be my resolution to get it done in January some time.

531 I think koffee's hittin' on you man. I mean, it's not every day that a girl wants to discuss your cheesy bits.

Blame it on Condi. I don't know why she looks so freakin' upset all the time. It's like she's constipated or something. But it's funny, ain't it?

531's cheezy bits are gross... but maybe with milk, it might make all the difference!

So what's this hankerin with Condi anyway? Cause she's a nasty sucker so you're giving everyone fair warning of what they'll cop if they mess with you, just by looking at your avatar?

Okay, while I'm here, another quick noob question about bikes (my sincerest appologies ). Everytime I go for a reasonable lengthed ride on my new bike where I get up it, I get a pain in my left upper abdominal (or my stomach, I'm really in tune with my body it seems). So WTF is up with that? Any of you lot had this?

Ok, according my crude calculations, you're gettin' less than 7 hours sleep -- that ain't enough
for a cyclist

Yeah, I know. I can't sleep at all lately, and I can't figure out why. Last night, I couldn't sleep until after midnight, and by 2:30am, I was wide awake, then was on and off until 6am. I'm on Aussie time!
