That was running a 44/16 (75") and spinning over 150 rpms. They said I was "spinning like a madman."

A single-speed on the road likely needs both front and rear brakes to be legal.

I feel the safest on my Van Dessel single-speed set-up, but am comfortable fixed or geared, on or off-road.
The key is chosing the right bike for the particular ride. Thirteen bikes allows for that.

My seven fixies range between a 42/16 to a 52/16. For rolling terrain I like a 44/16 (74") and I've done a 67 miler in that gear. Higher gears are fun for flat rides or hilly routes under 30 miles....
