Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hey, what's up with you guys today? Get out on the p!ss last night and suffering from dehydration-induced hangover? Or do you actually have real work to do today?

unlike you taswegians, who spend half your life freezing your aarse off.....the weather here today is magnificent.....so i know where they all are!.......except for hitchy who has his nose pressed against the office window...counting the minutes till either A/ the boss goes home. B/ 5.00pm or C/ the office miraculously catches fire & we all have to go home!.......(C is looking very much on the cards at the moment!)

Probably next Tuesday 30 November with the first of the ATTA time trials up Bonnet Hill. Us and about 60 other poseurs, plus the real racers like Sid Tabelay, Pete Smith and Mark Bowden.

It'll be the first airing for the Merida go-fast roadie, although I might just do it as a stir on the Peugeot fixed gear I finished cobbling together last weekend from a $10 tip-shop frame, a $30 Gitanes racer with broken chainstay, a POS rear hub, and the rims off my tourer (which is now the proud bearer of a Velocity Aerohead OC wheel on the rear and a plain Aero rim on the front).

The old Peugeot rides quite nicely thank you very much and I can just cope with 8% grades with the 38-17 set-up... but could do without the toe overlap on the front wheel!

Hey Muncher, we just got a Sigma light pretty cheap, and it works well if you don't mind the weight of the battery. I like those Niteflux too, and they're not too pricey.

Hoi you fellas. Answer this noob another question. Most of the roads around here are coarse grained crap and bumpy, and my bike seems byond fault. However on the way into town, we have one bit of super smooth hotmix about half a km long. When I'm pedaling over it I feel a very slight vibration on the power stroke of each leg (I guess I don't spin the best) thought the pedals. It's gone when coasting so it must be due to the drive train. Any idea what it could be and if it is a worry?

Thanks for that. But no, that's already been adjusted. I guess it's impossible to say. I'll sort it out.

You have to stop using your super-powers or you'll end up breaking something

But seriously, it's just your chain vibrating under tension as it comes of each tooth on your cluster. You could try degreasing it and your cluster to remove any original grease that has gone a bit sticky, then applying a decent aftermarket lube (eg. TriFlow). That should dampen things down a bit.

yep...but saccy, if you're using Triflow, use it sparingly. one drop on the inside of every 2nd link is plenty...otherwise it'll be everywhere!

Hitchy is right there! I use liberal amounts of triflow, then roll chain over all cluster rings, then wipe the excess off the chain with an old T-shirt and my purty white frame needs a clean after the next two rides!

BTW saccy, the power-vibes should ease up by themselves once your chain and cluster 'knit' (read: wear), but they will always be there.

I think Tri-Flows what I bought with the bike. Used to just use machine oil on the mtb, but that gunked up all over the cassette and ***** over time. With this Tri-Flow ***** the store dude said to spray it all over the cassette, then roll the chain around it over all the cogs, then wipe the excess off. You rekon he's smoking crack?

You serious about power vibes? Never got them on the mtb.

....he's definately smokin' something anyway......& also selling you a lot of triFlow!

seriously though, if you've got Triflow (little black bottle with a minute tube thingy you put in the top), i never put it on the cassette, & only use sparingly on the chain, the stuff seems to 'multiply'!.....too much & it'll be all over the frame, rear wheel & you'll have 'gunk' stuck everywhere!

Ah okay. Must be different **** then. This stuff was in a spray can. I was thinkin ol' Hitchy must be a bit anal if he takes the time to spray a drop on every second link.

Anyway, only putting it on every second link, you'll end up with half wet links and half dry ones, then a irregularly worn chain. Geez you fellas have got a lot to learn.

spray can!...fark, you'll have ***** everywhere!......BTW, i am extremely anal about the 486!.....its kept in a humidifier at home.....only comes out when I get a written guarantee from the weather bureau of temperatures between 21.4 & 23.9, humidity of no higher than 65% & the proposed route has been swept by 41 blokes in white overalls with tooth brushes!......if all that stacks up...we're on!

You didn't buy the $60 spray pack did you That's enough triflow for you and your children and their children and all their friends!!! The spray pack is built for bike mechanics who do 20-30 bike services a day. It saves them time I guess.

Anyway, the store dude's method will werk. But make sure you always clean as much of the old stuff and embedded road grit out of the chain, cluster, and jockey wheels before applying a new coat. It seems to get cloudy and stickyish when wet, so spend extra time cleaning after playing in the rain.

Probably. When you're spending that much dough on a bike, the little extra rip offs like that seem to fall through the cracks. Got me interested to see what I spent now.

Yeah, I'm not real keen on cleaning off a ton of gunk all the time. I think the dainty caresses of my chain like Hitchy might be the go.

I shouldn't say anything, coz I know my chain is stretched to the buggery and needs replacing, but I'm way to lazy for anything that sensible. Still, I'll probably give the bike a spruce up before Satdee, just so you bastards don't think I'm a slob or anything

MAAAAAATE, I haven't ridden the Kervello for three weeks!!
I put different bars on it and I can't be bothered spending the necessary 3 hrs with a set-square
and theodolite to get the STIs in the EXACT same spot as the old 531.

I've had that bike for 12 years, and if anything on my other bikes is .065mm, or more, out, it drives me k-nuts

How many kms on that chain?

(this is a "test" question. I've noticed that Thylo "drops and runs" -- posting a message, then never reading the replys )

I just did a drop and run. But I had to, the fumes were heinous.

*cough*, yes, anyway, the chain has done a little over 3,000kms.

No, no new bike for Saturday. Steel is real, ya'll! ( Although I must confess to wanting a Reynolds double butted Ti frame, but I'm way to poor and talentless as a rider for such shinannigans )
