Think about both, long and hard. As a bouns, think about whether it's the same in other parts of the world, does it necessarily have to be so, and is it sustainable in the long run.

Um... public transportation would never work where I lived. It had a couple taxis, but that was about it. Even if there was a bus line, I'd never take it.

is the fourth largest state is terms of land mass, yet is 44/50
in terms of population. Basically, it's the American frontier.
As of just a few years ago, there were still parts of Montana
that didn't have speed limits, since they were so desolate.
Anyway, people live there for a variety of reasons, and they
are all fairly spread out.

Without cars there would be no Critical Mass.

I'll try to help you a bit: why are there places where public transportation would not work? Ever heard of urbanistic plans? Ever heard that decades ago, there were many more public transportation/mass transit companies in the US?
Why there aren't such places in Europe?

Ever hear of rural america. It's that space between NYC and LA.
Public transportation sucks for moving cattle.

Doesn't mean that people don't overuse cars here but at least there is a somewhat viable alternative. We are not nearly as car-centered over here as you are.

If you come back with a "well I shouldn't have to move from my town just to save the planet..." well what are you prepared to do? People just expect that the solutions to all this to be handed to them. We all have to make some kind of an effort.
I live in London, UK and we have a cojestion charge: $16 to drive in to the city each day. That and the high price of petrol and parking mean that it is actually far cheaper and more convenient to go everywhere by taxi (unless you drive 60 miles a day or somthing), but stupid f***ing car drivers still insist on having their own bike-rider asasination tool.
But then again, if the streets weren't always full of idiots in cars, then it wouldn't be half as fun to ride inbetween them. Also, putting these idiots on bikes wouldn't stop them being idiots and they would still end up being a danger to non-idiot cyclists.
hmmm...anger...vented...enough?

Why couldn't Montana be like this? I don't know, maybe people think it's cool to live 100 miles from the closest human.

Why can't one own a car and a bike? I have a bike for general transpo and a car because sometimes I require one.
Why is owning 2 cars worse than owning one? I believe you can only drive one at a time.

It doesn't really matter if the average omnivorous cyclist only gets the equivalent of ~100mpg. Which is about the same mileage they would get if they strapped a small four stroke motor on the back of their bike with an increase of ~5-10mph. Or what a 3L Lupo with four people in it gets at ~50mph.
Cars=============================BADZ!
Living in the city with bikez================GOODZ!
Nvm an actual analysis of the energy required to produce the goods and energy a city slicker has to consume... That don't matter. Even if living in the country with half a brain would allow for a much lower cost of living, much easier (or possible) energy independence, and lotsa landz.

i think its really funny the amount of peoplei've never seen post in this forum before now. furthermore owning a car is wrong on so many levels, from feeding the consumer driven system that's only going to later be used to screw you over to the effects on the environment both in production of the vehicle as well as the later usage. then there's the issue of your mental well being, if you're driving miles and miles in a car everyday you cerrtainly can't expect that to effect your mental state positively. i'm not going to go any further, i'm just going to say that cars are evil, there's no two ways about that. lots of people can justify owning and using a car, that doesn't make them any less horrible, it just means that you've accepted that for your own sake its worth the trade.
