NO WAY! the 4130 steel used in the Surly is WAY stronger than Deda tubing used in the EAI Bareknuckle. The noodley feeling your describing is the wider wheelbase and lower bottom bracket shell on the Surly as compared to the traditional track geometry of the Bareknuckle.

I have bunnyhopped a lot of stairs on my Surly and I would never have done that on a bareknuckle. Not to mention a few of my friends who just casually ride their bikes have snapped their Bareknuckles at the BB shell and HT / DT juncture.

Sinn 08-28-08 07:52 AM

Not to mention the oversized tubing on the Bareknuckle.

I don't do tricks. I just want a fast bike and the Bareknuckle delivers on that front. Sorry to compare apples to oranges. You called me on that. (And I shouldn't speak badly about the recently deceased.)

Is the Surly frame butted at the HT/DT juncture? It seems odd that it would break at or close to the butt.

In my opinion i wouldn't think that this was a failure on Surlys end in any way, i'm surprised any frame held up that long to you!

dedacciai com 12.5 is essentially the same as standard 4130, and both frames are double butted. what are you basing this on?

my guess for him would be thats he's exploded both while riding/tricks and the 4130 held up the longest.

both are double butted and 4130, but which one has thicker tubing?

I wouldn't be surprised if the Steamroller is 9/6/9 and the bareknuckle is 8/5/8

Sinn 08-28-08 12:31 PM

The Bareknuckle is a lighter frame. It is thinner. The oversized tubing allows for that without a significant loss in durability (i.e., not significant enough to make it easily breakable).

I have seen dozens of cracked and broken frames; this is the most perfect break I have ever seen. Perhaps in addition to his tricks and hard riding JP may have been in range of some laser weapons!!

I'm wondering (seriously) if the crack was evident for a while before it snapped. It must have started at the weld and worked its way around slowly to break so evenly.

johnprolly 08-28-08 02:14 PM

Even when it broke, there was no crack. I "palmed" the frame over looking for cracks. Then I stepped on the NDS pedal and PINNNNNNNNNG! it popped. It was really a PING too.

My SE Draft. I know.... no need to say anything about all its downfalls (BB, Hi-Ten steel, Stem...) I actually don't find it that heavy. Lighter then some of the conversions out there. A blast to ride, and thats all that should matter.

that fuga makes me wet.

elmoloveftl 08-29-08 12:32 AM

Insane. A clean break like that is so very rare. That just isn't how metal usually fails. Amazing.

Likin' the new leader frame. faded letters are cool.

iwegian 08-30-08 03:02 PM

is that a dent in the frame, by the chainstay?

cc700 08-30-08 03:06 PM

iweigan, those are put there for pedal clearance. they're part of the design. most bikes have them.

that GT is sooooo ballzy. wicked awesome.

Looks like you can only use about half of the dropout before the tire hits dt?

kcirick 08-30-08 06:53 PM

My Kona Paddy Wagon. Pretty much everything is stock. Thinking of upping the ratio from 42/16 to 46/16
