uh, reading comprehension not switched on today? ;)

didja' miss the part about riding on the hoods being my favourite and most comfortable position? and flipped bars are just as ugly to me as chopped unflipped bars are to you.
oh yeah, they're wide too. a nice and wide 46cm, great for honking up some of the climbs around here.

guess i'm not conforming to the trendoid fixie mafia posenger hipster image (or whatever) properly enough.
i just like riding my bike.

thanks for the other compliment though!

LóFarkas 12-09-05 03:42 AM

Uh, flipping the bars would give you pretty much the same position, and you could use your friggin' brake lever properly as well...
I just don't see why you would want to save 60 grams of weight by chopping the drops off, but carry around an 80 gram dummy lever while you could get the same hand position and better braking without having to carry a silly useless part around.

Anyway, it's your bike, not mine;)

scrublover 12-09-05 03:53 AM

uh,no. it's not "pretty much the same" hand position. i've tried flipped bars, and real tt bars with levers. don't like them, and certainly doesn't feel the same. the brake only sees use when coming down some of the higher rides around here. tried using only the one lever, and didn't like the way it was either. i've also tried no levers and a cross bartop lever. in the end, i went back to both levers because it's simply the position i like to ride in. i've even kept the levers on when brakeless in the past, simply because i like the tops.

gee, and i thought proper use of my brakes and so on was how it worked for me.......

one of the things i love about this forum: the endless nitpicking about other peoples bikes.
i don't like the aesthetics of flipped bars, but i'm not going to ***** to someone about how wrong i think they are to use them for *their* ride.

thanks. contemplated taking the dummy lever blade off, leaving the hood. but some of the mountian rides i'd like to do later next summer will likely have me throwing a freewheel on. in which case i'll stick the rear brake on as well. so i'm just leaving it be for now.

awaiting a new on-one il pompino frame to replace my crosscheck as well. can't wait to build that one up, even though i'll only be mostly transfering parts.

I was going to buy risers for one of my bikes. Then I realized that I already had a flat bar, and it had a quill stem. Problem solved.

Here's a pic of my buddy Sam's workbike. It may or may not be a panasonic. He normally rides a tall gear on platform pedals. He also rode it around for months even after he snapped the frame.

In the background is an unknown fixie.

I considered having flat bars but the boys screamed in horror at the thought of the high stem. ;)

TheDL 12-09-05 05:08 PM

My g/f's former S/S had a 90deg, 50mm stem w/ riser bars...that was fun.

OK. My dear ebay friend, Ohio is not Palo Alto Calif. EVERYTHING is MUCH more expensive here. The cost of boxing reflects the cost of the workers at the shop, the cost of their gas, mortgages, loans, cars etc etc. Gosh, I WISH I could pack and ship for free! Unfortunately that is simply not the case. All the shops in the 9 county Bay Area are about the same price for boxing. Here's a reality check. The median price for a house in Palo Alto is from 600k to 1.6mill.......get the idea? Gas is 2.75$/gal. for regular.....A loaf of bread is five dollars..etc etc.
The first bikes I sold on Ebay I made the mistake of 'guessing' what the cost of boxing would be. I guessed [incorrectly] that it would be about 50$. When I discovered that it was twice that [after the auction] it would have been poor business to change the cost to the winner of the auction after the fact. So I ate the additional fifty to get the bike boxed. Now...now I know better. Again. Call Mikes Bikes in Palo Alto, 100$ is what they charge. Look, if you win the auction, and can find a shop with-in twenty miles of palo alto that will box for less, at the same quality of boxing [and that is a risk YOU will take] then I'll take the bike to THAT shop and have them box it. How's that sound?

the guy is a bicycle guy, not a professional ebay seller. i've seen $100 boxing's before and from the start i figured it +$100 to any other bid outside of the area when it was agreed to a local pick up, don't hate- the guy not only brought the bike up to the bay area, but when he saw me arrive with a wheelset, offered me a ride home, even reminded me that it didn't have any brakes either, which i laughed inside.

more bob jackson please
