You don't have to use a brake. Just have one, because when you need it, you'll really need it. Just a safety precaution. Why do we have air bags? We never use them? But when we need them, it can be the difference between life and death. Plus, you've gotta have some old brake setup lying around.

And actually, I believe "breaks" are for fakes.

I learned a braking technique when i was a little kid, which was to use the sole of your shoe and apply pressure on the rear wheel, and it locks the wheel up. Has anyone ever done that and is that stupid?

guy named ted shred in ssan francisco, runs an ss pista w/ no brakes. uses is foot to stop, it's pretty nuts.

That's what I would do on really beat up bikes as a little kid growing up in Brazil...used to just mess around like that and stop with my right foot. I don't know about riding ss with no brakes, that's a different story.

Yeah, I read he goes through several pairs of shoes a month, on top of tires.

Definitely not the best set up but still fun to ride. I'm just getting into riding fixed, so if there are any Bklyn people who might want to school me send me a PM. I can compensate with beer.

I recieved a new bike from my buddy for Christmas. It was a geared Univega when he rescued it from his parent's basement. He never rode it much, so he decided to give it to me, since he knew I was looking for something a little more practical (lighter) than my Varsity. So I adopted it, changed out some parts, and gave her a new coat. I am really happy with the way it turned out. It weighs just under 20 pounds, and from the little bit of riding I've been able to do in between car accidents and rain storms, it feels great. I think my next step will be to add red accents to the lugs; not sure yet.

This is the crude tarp tent I made in the garage to ensure a nice paint job.

This was just a photo I took about 2/3 of the way into the painting.

And here she is...

Looks good. We need to organize a ride... there must be at least 4 or 5 of us from corvallis on here.

Fisty 'O Toole 01-01-06 07:57 PM

Nice, but I think you need a brake.

Jonny Pockets 01-01-06 07:57 PM

Thanks. Yeah, I'd love to. I am in Beaverton until the 8th, however.

trons 01-01-06 07:57 PM

nice paint job.

Jonny Pockets 01-01-06 07:58 PM

I may add a brake later, but I took it off until I get used to the clips, since I was riding platforms before. Skidding is fun...

Thanks for the comments guys.

chicagoamdream 01-01-06 08:01 PM

Nice work, Jonny! I hope the Varsity's not being retired, though.

Jonny Pockets 01-01-06 08:07 PM

Haha, she'll be my ride to class still. People on campus have learned to get out of the way for that tank.
