my first fixie, just five days old (and yes, the white bar tape is already grimey)

42:14 (although now i'd like to do something like 50:17)
frame & fork: surly steamroller
rear hub: surly new
rear rim: mavic cxp33
tires: continental ultrasports... will probably tear apart once i start skidding more
cranks: bulletproof crankarms with a rocket chainring (ass cheap!)
pedals: eggbeaters SL
cog: surly, dura-ace lockring
chain: sram pc-58
saddle: san marco -- off nashbar for $10!
h-bars: chop & flip, might get nittos in the future
stem: on-one (another cheapo option)
brake pulled off my old cannondale, shimano 600. lever found in used parts bin.

front wheel is also off the old roadie, mavic open4 rims and shimano i-don't-know-what hub, i plan on building a front to match the rear....

nothing special, but it's still a shweet ride.

by the way: anyone know of a good way to de-brown-ify my saddle/bar tape without destroying them?

adamkell 03-23-05 01:50 PM

a little citrus cleaner and a soft rag or paper towels have always worked well on my white leather saddles.

bikeordie 03-23-05 02:08 PM

too bad it doesn't work well on your face!

So, how is that honey of a bike doing?

getting new wheels built...currently spinning wolber tubulars, spoked are tied and soldered, campy record high-flange. kind of a shame to ride that on the street so.... my sunday wheels? velodrome?? new wheels are miche/open pros.. but might downgrade the rims for street use...
it's set up as 50/16 (sugino mighty/campy) right now.. good for the track maybe not so hot for the street. not sure which to ditch cuz i like em both... i just got a sugino mighty 46t off ebay but it's black (oops) which doesn't really fit with the colour scheme.. guess i got a bit impulsive... i'll probably just ride it and see how it goes.
pedals are another issue.. galli clips and straps but i'll be changing to clipless... a toss up between m540s and ATACs. ooh, guess i'll need new shoes then too eh. kinda gets expensive after awhile huh...
sorry.. rambling again.

OK I tried to post a picture of my new bike here but it won't upload because it says the file's too large- Which is odd because I posted a picture on here before taken with the same camera on the same settings.
Oh well! :D

Oh well! :D

gary- if you want, i can photoshop it into a smaller file. give me a call.

daveed 03-24-05 03:24 PM

Same problem here. Is there something short of photoshop one can do -- perhaps with the cameria itself -- to make sure the jpeg is 100 KB or or less? Just wondering. Thanks.

dolface 03-24-05 03:26 PM

depends on the camera, but you should be able to set the resolution...

daveed 03-24-05 03:37 PM

Thanks. I give it a shot, dolface.

On a rare, sunny day in Cleveland I leaned my new fixed urban steed against a huge rock on the shore of Lake Erie. Given its gearing -- 16t-43t -- this Nishiki hybrid has some get-up and go. White Industries' fabulous ENO hub tensions the chain. Not much else to brag about, component-wise.

i thought you were going to take the picture infront of the graffiti wall?

daveed 03-24-05 11:35 PM

Hey Matt. You're right, I was. But I headed to a spot closer to my house. I'll get to that other wall eventually.

I don't think anything is nicer than the Vanilla track frames. They make them right there in Portland if you haven't checked them out yet!

oh, we know about them all right, but i think that they are out of most of our priceranges (except for chimay, and i think he had to take out a second mortgage or someting ;) ), and at least for me, i'd be too scared to ride it anywhere for fear of damaging it.

Surferbruce 03-26-05 10:16 AM

snap up one of those cinellis if you can get one for 850. the new ones, which are still steel and ultra cool, are around 1400 give or take. i'm with you on the beauty of those frames though.

Yeah, they're definately way out of my price range, but WOW are they ever beautiful!
