Are there a lot of cycling events and stuff there?
Penn and drexel more or less same place. I would stay in West Philly, but as you see from my other posts, I am biased. Around Drexel, ~33rd street and higher, lancaster ave region are good. some parts between ~30th -33rd can be dangerous (burglary, mugging etc). But they are all livable. lots of stores either around these parts or in west philly. don't worry.

My good friend moved from Brooklyn to Philly. He said it's got it's ups & downs. He never thought he could live anywhere else but NYC, but now that he left, he feels like he could live anywhere. I've visited him out there and it seems cool. He's got a wife & baby daughter and they live in the Art Museum Area - seems like a good place for a family. He doesn't ride, so he basically walks or drives everywhere, but I saw lots of people on bikes and it seems like it would be the best way to get around.

There's a good possibility I might be moving to Philly this summer as well...
My wife's looking at jobs in the area, and I'm flexible, so if she finds a good one we're moving.

south philly doesn't start at washington. lots of locals seem to say otherwise, but accurately south street marks its north, and goes east and west from river to river.

somehow, though, it's simultaneously getting gentrified. re purposed warehouses are getting really popular, even in high crime areas. weird the way phila changes in a span of five years.

false. it's cool if yr in one of the colleges (or hang out with teenagers). i hated it there... everyone there was weird and really into gwb protest culture or really young.
i felt like everyone i met was way too into hanging out in living rooms and pulling tubes (or crossing the bridge) for fun...

If you're really into bar culture, or otherwise spending money to have fun, then West Philly is not the place for you. If you want a pleasant place to live within the city though, it's the way to go, in my opinion.

It also has my favorite bike shop in the city (Firehouse), as well as Neighborhood BikeWorks, the local bike co-op.

we're not talking technicalities here, this here is neighborhood talk, as in wheres the neighborhood start.
Everyone, everyone knows south philly starts at wash. yes TECHNICALLY its south (hence the name), but the culture isn't there till wash. However, currently there is a motion to set to barrier back to washington OFFICIALLY. Either way the neighborhood starts at wash. And if it is at south, what about neighborhoods like queen village between south and wash, or are they not really a neighborhood, but instead just part of south philly. If your not considering that a neighborhood, then your on a different plane than me.

this is my hood g, between south and wash, so i gots to know it.

no disrespect sp00ki.

I feel like anywhere on and around Drexel's campus is a rip. I'm a senior at Drexel, but I live in South Philly, and housing in U. City always seems ridiculous.

see, this is how things get confusing for people new to the city. the NEIGHBORHOODS have names for that reason; south philly starts at south street. if you want to get specific, you say grad hospital or italian market or bella vista or grays ferry or moyamensing, etc...
i get that people say "real" south philly starts at ____, not ____, but that's really not how the city works.

I thought South Philly started at Wash Ave myself. A friend of mine lives around Christian St, and his neighborhood was considered part of Society Hill.

University City is a complete rip. But if you want to see REAL rip-off real estate, visit Temple.

A small apartment by one of the apartment companies (Kardon, Oxford, etc) is about 800 a month per person. $3200 a month for a small place is NOT right.

That said, next year I'm living in U City.

that's because people from the burbs move in and confuse everything with mix and match information instead of learning the facts. society hill is a neighborhood in center city and doesn't touch christian. it stops at lombard st.
if you're going to live somewhere, you should learn what's what...

Sorry for offending you. I've lived in South Philadelphia all my life and I have a pretty good understanding of the surrounding areas.

i love living in west philly. true there isnt really night life out here, but there are some decent ethiopian bars on balitmore and locust. rent can either be expensive or really cheap. i live at 50th and cedar and have lived in two houses. one i paid 380 a month and now i pay 250 a month. our next door neighbors pay 600 a month. ive also paid as much as 700 for a one bedroom apt at 49th and baltimore. there are definitely deals to be had. easy to ride around as long as you watch out for cars not stopping at stop signs.

Larry, do you live at Mike B's house? I'm a Delaware transplant myself, and used to live five houses down from there, though now I live around 47th and Spruce.

i knew single apartment would get to $700 plus, but i didnt know four person places got up like that. each of those bedrooms does have its own bathroom so its similar to a single. there is not a single other place priced nearly that high, but that place does get even more expensive!

edit: just read some more of the thread, so i guess not. but still, ouch!
