Most of my riding time I'm either going up or down a hill, so I'm going <10mph the majority of the time. Races are usually >25mph, but its mostly pack stuff and I don't see myself going off the front, so its whatever.

Also while enve braking is almost as good as alloy, its just not as good as alloy. I'll be dropping almost 300g from the wheelset when I get the new wheels, and a Quarq Elsa isn't that much heavier than a Campy chorus crankset. Should be saving a lot of money in the process as well.

but but.. deep carbon rims can look so badass on certain bikes

Pretty much the only drawback, but its so important :(

The fredsled's gotta look good

Mumonkan 02-25-16 06:56 PM

i think the sweet spot is ~30mm depth with an aero profile, sexy without looking like a tri geek

Unkle Rico 02-25-16 07:09 PM

Agreed

300 grams is 2/3 lb! Taking that much weight off the wheels is going to improve the way it climbs tremendously.

If you aren't riding full disc wheels you aren't cool!

TMonk 02-25-16 08:55 PM

I'm going to buy a carbon tubular rear (~60mm) with some of my tax return $$$ this year, most likely used from fleabay. I have a Reynolds 46 front clincher that I'll pair it with, and together they will be used strictly for race day. I'll take the help where I can get it. Also, feeling fast is an important psychology.

I ride alloy clinchers on a daily basis though, like a sensible person. Hed Belgium DT swiss 240 front/Ptap G3 rear, or some Open Pros/Ultegra when the Ptap wheels are out of commission.

deep carbon tubulars how silly

TMonk 02-26-16 09:17 AM

i know rite?

but being silly has never stopped me from doing anything :)

Nagrom_ 02-26-16 09:20 AM

I bought a set of 50mm chicarb tubs like a week ago.

TMonk 02-26-16 10:18 AM

nice. chicarb FTW.

I'm spending all day at NAHBS which is 2 miles from my house. Oh happy day!

100% serious. There are more details but I won't share them here.

Mumonkan 02-26-16 10:55 AM

that is beyond funny. quite fitting since that shop (i think its a shop?) was like JA leader build central

Scrodzilla 02-26-16 10:57 AM

Brotures opened a "shop" here in San Diego over the summer and very literally, nobody cares. We always forget they're even here.

One of the dudes who works there actually comes into our shop to buy stuff.

Mumonkan 02-26-16 11:00 AM

lol, japan loves weird american ****, but weird americans dont give a **** about that aesthetic here. ironyyyy

Scrodzilla 02-26-16 11:05 AM

I'm just glad nobody will ever have to deal with Sal Lombroso and his insanity ever again. Hopefully (at very least) their customer service improves as a result.

Mumonkan 02-26-16 11:07 AM

Yeah, it's crazy. We've all learned a lot in the past few years.

Huffandstuff 02-26-16 11:23 AM

My 25c tire won't fit on my GTB without me trying the wheel, I'd been sneaking by with my 25c pasela nut the marathon I bought is just a hair larger and no go.
