I understand that, I was pointing out the smaller picture showing the fork/tire clearance....you know, the thing that doesn't seem to matter here yet when talking to actual business that sell these bikes for a living, it's one of the first questions asked.

But again, everyone here is the expert and this information is irrelevant...the customer should be happy with 3" of gap above the tire and deal with it.

That frame/parts have been sold months ago. What's your point?

motrheadsroadie 04-27-16 05:41 PM

hit a bump in the road with a tight fork like that and the tires gonna deflect into the crown and feel really bad.
thats not really an issue if youre riding on an indoor track with zero imperfections. but youre not.

Considering throwing down for some Fairweather/Nitto Bullmoose bars for the Space Horse. Thoughts?

Of course. Just like when you hit a peddle and it gets stuck in the gap which makes you fly over the handlebars. Got anymore good ones?

Meanwhile in the real world there are thousands and thousands running around with Japanese and other Euro track bikes (that were made for tubulars...and gasp!! some are riding clinchers!!!!!) even with 25mm tires barely stuffed under the crown.

So please...link some of the news stories or bike forum threads showing all these grisly fork/tire catastrophes. I'm sure you could find plenty since this setup is so common all over the world.

I'm surprised Pedalroom even has track bike pages left.....since the owners should all be dead by now from running such deadly tire clearances on the street.

EDIT: Last post in thread. My brain is starting to hurt.

Today I needed a new bottom bracket on my beater bike with a no-name square taper crank... decided at the last minute to splurge with part of my tax refund on a nicer external bearing crankset instead. No regrets.

Not Sammi, who is, indeed a badass. Jenny something..

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Make a bike street worthy of that's where you intend to ride it.

There's nothing wrong with being a gear-head.

There's also nothing wrong with getting in e-fights about being a gear-head either. Right???

Also, Sketchy Alan. That is a fantastic username idea, and who doesn't know a Sketchy Alan?

Went on the all city bike ride today, no one discussed tire clearances. The log lady is pretty tight.

Sure looks fun. Did they have the stock rigid fork setup?

Yup and it was running I think 2.8s, Iuse rode it for a bit around the parking lot but my buddy demo'd it the whole ride and loved it.

Muffin Man 04-28-16 12:05 AM

WNR at the track today. I rode a steamroller which has a bb drop of 70, and I think 50voltphantom has 32s in his?

I did alright, but didn't win anything and could have raced better in the points race. First race, so lots of room and time for improvement

50voltphantom 04-28-16 07:08 AM

^Nice. 33mm with breathing room.

Did you have to use a file?

LOL. The steamroller fork is basically a cyclocross fork sans canti studs. I can fit my finger between the crown and tire.

Those boutique shops are exactly that, boutiques. Their business model specifically targets people who obsess over such details.

You say you want it "correct", like your Porsche analogy. Yet you are going modify it in order to run 23s on a bike that should never be fitted with such big tires. Seems like you are contradicting your own rules.

Does that triangle increase rigidity? Seems like it would, so I say go for it.

SquidPuppet 04-28-16 10:49 AM

Regulatori = Spandex Spartan?

I'm being sent to fork crown tire gap tolerance faux pas jail.
