What's the wurst that could happen?

Did my first race. Didn't die, didn't lose and had fun! Oh and it was cold, 32 before the wind chill.

Today I woke up in the second week of April in Michigan, to accumulating snow that is supposed to turn to freezing rain, and then rain later on. Mother nature, you cray. Oh yeah, this is on top of the 4" that we got early Saturday morning that had mostly melted already. I already have to work all weekend, this just puts me in a worse mood because I am not riding to work in that crap.

I have that same stand, but the bench-mounted version. How do you like the free-standing one? I'm thinking about just adding a section of pipe to mine, and then welding that to a large steel plate, more like a shop stand for a little more rigidity.

Of course it's not a sturdy as I'd like but for $50 you can't really beat it. It holds firmly enough for my purposes.

Fast! Distance?

thewilson 04-10-16 11:35 AM

Only 15mi which was both a bummer and a blessing.

Congrats, still fast.

I hear you about the temps. A few days ago I rode when it was 40f. It was my first time in cold like that. I had to stop after 15 miles because my throat and left ear were getting sore. I'm just not built for cold weather.

TMonk 04-10-16 11:53 AM

Nice ride thewilson!!! What was the course like? Was there any appreciable wind or hills on the course?

I've gotten pretty used to riding in the 30s-40s but I'll still take warm weather over it any day of the week. I've gone out in the low teens a couple of times and it's ****ing miserable.

Thanks! Mostly oval, very flat but coming back around was a solid headwind, luckily I was able to position myself to be inside the group to avoid it most of the time.

Mumonkan 04-10-16 03:44 PM

I think the stock turbos were only boosted to like 5psi stock. I read the blocks can take a ton more than that.

This will be a fun project.

I have no doubts that you can probably handle it. Its not a terribly complicated job to do on them. I should note that the 20 minute method is known as the slip-n-slide, and isn't advisable if you're going to hop it up. I'd budget six hours to do it 100 percent correctly, and to deal with rusty or stuck fasteners.

I love to read of people hauling things around on their bikes and loving doing it.

Today I was allowed to remember that having the right bag makes one's relationship with their bicycles change so drastically that one of them will very likely be abandoned and sold for a scrap price.

Also, today, I realized that all of the 1/8th inch drivetrain components (including the bits that harbor them) on this thing I am building were ill-considered and will be abandoned and sold for scrap prices.

One less regret in life. Even if you never race again, you can never say, "I regret never having raced my bike."

Do it! my advice would be the same that everyone else will mention: Do the fast group rides, hold your line and have fun.

iirc a full bottle is like 2lbs so you dropped ALL THE POUNDS

TimothyH 04-10-16 07:40 PM

16 fl oz water =1.04 lbs, give or take.

In the 5's, stay towards the front because its safer and less people to deal with, but don't take pulls if you don't have to because it kills you. Preriding the course is nice so you know what to expect before you get to it instead of being taken by surprise.
