I wish I had a buddy like yours.
I think that first one is a late 70s Yamaha BMX bike.

Bikes: 1981 Raleigh Super Course

Today, I purchased what appears to be a 1981 Raleigh Super Course (based on my internet research). I found the bike in a flea market and paid the $40 that the seller was asking. I'm new to road biking and know little about bikes. I'd really appreciate anything that anyone can share with me about this bike. Is this a decent bike and did I get a good deal?

Thanks.

Yes, assuming the bike is in decent condition,$40 for a Super Course sounds like a good deal to me.

^^ If it is your size, then you got a great deal. Check out this thread for some pics and info and search "sheldon brown retro raleigh" for a TON of information about old Raleighs and everything else bike related you might ever want to know.

They are great bikes and you will enjoy it I'm sure.

Thanks for the replies and the good information. The bike is in pretty good shape (just a couple small rust spots). The components appear to be original and everything works. The frame measures to be about a 56cm, which is just a little small for me. Road it today and it was perfect for cruising around the neighborhood. Eventually, I hope to find a slightly larger 58cm bike, but I'm happy with this Raleigh for now.

Well before you pedal another 8th of a mile on it, tear down all the bearings and lube it up. It will not last long
at all with dried up grease, and it will pedal easier. I paid $175 for mine, and was not all that upset. $40 is a STEAL
for an 80-81 model!! I don't care what anyone here says. They're not the old stamped drop plain guage bikes from
the 70's, they're completely different.,,,,BD

Here's mine. I love this thing, and it rides as close to perfect as I could ask for on a vintage bike.

Picked up today for $100. Imagine a bicycle made in the worst way (out of steel pressings, bolted together) - now imagine it has a motor attached to it (over the front wheel for some reason).

Now imagine it is French.

That is a Velosolex.
I saw a lot of these when we were walking around Paris when I was there in Oct of 08. They had a bunch of old motorcycles and mopeds that are still being used everyday. Looks like yours is a 46cc model and is missing the head light. A nice find for $100,I have two old bicycle motors from the 70's that I need to get going one is a Fox and mounts on the rear and the other is a Tanaka Bike Bug that is designed like their Aqua Bug boat motor and it mounts on the front.I have all the manuals and titles for the motors I have as I got them from the gentleman who sold them new and they were returned because they couldn't climb the West Cape May bridge when pulling a loaded threewheeler Duh!

If that is red spray paint, you can try spray carburetor cleaner. It usually dissolves spray paint, but it's not harsh enough to eat into baked on finishes. Acetone might work too (but take longer).

It's a 49cc model I believe. I do have the headlight, but not the mounting bolt. I just placed an order for the missing parts this morning, so hopefully I'll have it all together this coming week. The cool thing is that since they never went out of production you can get just about any part you need for the post '66 models. Production ended in France in 1988, and the tooling went to Hungary. When production ended there in 2002, they start making them in France again! I understand it is the second most popular motorbike of all time, running behind the Honda Cub.

That's great I wish they still made parts for the motors I have ,I said 46cc because of the model 4600 that is on it and that is the way it works most of the time.

I can't believe you got another one and I can't find one LOL. My brother and I were talking yesterday telling a friend about when we were kids that I would jump anything I could on a bicycle, and I used to jump a 55 gallon drum standing up with a short board on his cousins Yamaha mx bike with no landing ramp and it could take the abuse.

I have had a few of the knock offs but the forks couldn't take the abuse so I would switch them out with a solid fork and install real motorcycle rear shocks that had good dampening and put a bmx saddle on it. I would love to find just a frame now let alone a whole bike

There was I think two other motocross bmx there when I left but they are most likely in a giant trailer now with all the other bikes that where left behind. I liked this one the most. The rear shocks whernt on it, the ones on it where broken, I've had thosetwo laying around for years waiting to put them on my own bike, the black ones my dad's I finally got my own! I'll also try that carb cleaner, the paint flakes off.

, I have had good luck stripping the paint off a Fuji UP Beat Cruiser that had been spray painted red just using a spray on paint remover. I am down to all the knooks and crannies now and the paint under it is fantastic just spray on a small spot wait for the bubbles and wipe off even the decals are fine, I think it is called BIX paint remover and it is water based. it is the blue bike in the photo and everything on it was spray painted red.

zachdluchs, it looks nice. What are your plans for it? It looks like a thoroughbred track racing frame.

I'm hoping to restore it and put same-era french parts on it. The frame is a thoroughbred since it has no brake holes drilled in the fork or rear bridge. I'm pretty excited about it, it will be my first restoration build.

Political comments have no place on the C&V bike forum. No one here wants to hear this stuff.

There's a forum for here for you, though, so someone somewhere does.

Agreed. I just posted my smartass comment to try and poke some fun at the comment about the Velosolex being a gross poluter.

A sample of the haul picked up this weekend. The Super Record I wont have time to mess with andwill pass it on to a new home.

Been on the hunt for a Aluminum frame,so the Gary fisher and rear F/S frame will be made into another homemade extra-cycle like this one.

Now the kids want one too..

I haven't seen one of these since i was a kid.

Here are the bikes I acquired on Saturday.

Shogun: not bad but needs a lot of cosmetic work.

Nishiki. Nothing special and all steel. Not sure it's worth keeping.

Centurion for a short rider, made the Terry way. I'm excited about this one. It's also very light.

Mongoose with 24" wheels. In good shape.

Nice Diamond Back, also in good shape. Rides well.

Total cash outlay for these five bikes was $15. That doesn't count the labor I put into the barter deal for the short bike and the two mountain bikes.

In an attempt to reduce the size of my bike collection (which some of you would consider laughably small!) I've sworn off most of the estate/garage sale hunting of the past. This weekend was a true test, because the warm weather of the week before seems to have kick started the garage sale season. I remained strong, however, and did not visit one sale. I can hear you all gasping in disbelief! Well, this morning I drove past a local church that holds a regular junk sale twice weekly. Not too long ago and for a couple years prior, I would stop religiously at this sale, but turned up next to nothing for all my efforts. I had some time, however, so I figured what was the harm in a 5 minute stop? Lo and behold, the yard was filled with bikes! No one showed much interested in the two bikes below, besides a father who knew either would be better than a crappy Wal-Mart type bike his son wanted. I tried to help persuade him, but to no avail. So I was forced to bring them home with me, lest they face the indignity of standing alone in the rain, or worse yet end up in the dumpster at the end the parking lot.

First is an '88 Panasonic DX3000. Would have been in excellent condition if someone hadn't left it outside for a bit. Frame is okay, but the chain is rusted and there's some light rust on some of the chrome bits:

Second is a '79 (I think) Nishiki Olympic 12 mixte. Never seen this decal set or headbadge on a Nishiki. It was probably used once then hung upside down in the garage of a woodworker. It's got some light layers of sawdust, most pronounced on the underside of the downtube. Other than that - and the tires - it's really pristine.

Been out of town for a few months so I have some catching up to do here..................today I thrifted a Schwinn Crosscut w/700s and a 15" Bianchi Alante. Both need some sprucing up. A few weeks ago I flipped an old Schwinn Mesa Runner in excellent condition and the buyer left me an 86 Traveller that needs a bit of sprucing up, as well as a large Sprint with an odd mix of parts including a nice Sugino drive side crank w/drilled rings.
