Food poisoning.

Anyone ever get food poisoning while at work and then can't ride home? It just happened to me. Ended up having to have the girlfriend come pick me+bike up and drive us home. Any gross/funny stories about similar experiences?

Now I am dehydrated and really weak, so doubt I'll be able to ride in tomorrow(30mi/RT). Best ways to recover?

In another thread I talked about how the only time I was sorry I'd ridden my bike in was when I got gastroenteritis in the middle of the shift. I took an immodium 45 minutes before leaving, and pedaled home as fast as I could without causing a major "blowout."

Thankfully my white saddle remained unsullied.

Yeah, it has happened to me once at work. I work for a food company so testing food out all day can lead to... well... not so friendly conditions.

One day we tasted a lot of food and my stomach was killing me. I decided it was best to leave at that time. Half way home I almost exploded. The bumps and climbing did NOTHING for me. The onlth thing that helped was to take off my coat (it was freezing out) and keep really cold which minimizes the need to explode for a short peirod of time.

I got sick a few times while at work, not just stomach, sometimes colds or bad headaches, so then I leave the bike at work and take the subway.

Bikes: Nothing amazing... cheap old 21 speed mtb

Food poisoning usually takes me down for 2-3 days or so. I usually just try and work through it once the initial insane pain and vomiting etc has passed. The thought of actually trying to ride 20km home in that condition? Not happening.

Oh, for recovery? Gatorade/pedialyte. If you have any gels with glucose and electrolytes those will help too.

Because sugar is really good for your digestive system...especially when it's down and out...
If you want "electrolytes" why not eat some salt + fruit?

Best cure for indigestion is giving your system some time to recover and feeding on matter that is easy to digest, but that is full of nutrients at the same time. Probiotic yogurt is probably the best choice. Add a low-fiber fruit like a banana (which has some magical electrolytes as well), and you're set.

It didn't happen at work, but I got food poisoning recently after eating at a pub. I got lucky, I came home not long after eating and the festivities didn't start untill about two hours after after I got home. Otherwise I would have been all asplody in public...

For recovery: clear fluids. AVOID DAIRY AT ALL COSTS (ask me how I know), cut down on sugar and definitely avoid anything fatty. Sports drinks with artificial sweetener agreed with me, and after a day I drank watered-down fruit juice (2/3 juice, 1/3 water) but YMMV. Don't eat solid food until after the diarrhea stops. Stay at home for a couple days until, um, normal functioning resumes.

Weshigh- if you're feeling weak, don't even bother going to work tomorrow, you'll feel absolutely miserable and take longer to recover.

My story is WAY too gross to tell here, but it involves riding about forty miles (from Manhattan to my home on Long Island) after not having been so lucky as some of the others who have responded.

Yeah, sports drinks are totally hard on your stomach, that's why you'd never ever use them while you're exercising or anything.

Yikes. You can't open with that and not provide the details, though! It sounds like something that should be sent in to Drew Magary on Deadspin. He runs (zing!) poop stories in his reader mailbag.

I've had gastroenteritis a few times (thanks Popeyes!) and I don't think I could pedal too far after the initial stomach churning starts...

A few years ago, I went out for a fast food run with some coworkers, and just grabbed a chocolate shake. About two miles into my homeward ride, I felt like I got stabbed in the gut and had to pull over until the pain eased a bit. I made it home without any unsanitary episodes, but it was pretty touch and go.

I've mostly sworn off fast food, but I've had some gut-wrenching meals from the roti joint next to my office. That Trinidadian food is so good that they're going to have to poison me fatally before I'll stop eating it...

I wouldn't.
My exercise food/drink:
- heavy cream (from grass-fed cattle)
- water
- salty foods when finished

If I drink Gatorade, or use those sport gels, I get the squirts a couple of hours after the exercise.

PS This 'diet' only applies when I do longer distance running/cycling. When I just do regular exercise (5-10km run or 10-20km ride) I don't consume anything before or during.

I've gotten a stomach bug with symptoms that materialized after I got to work. Actually I was feeling a little off in the morning when I woke up, but I didn't consider it a big deal. By the middle of the day I was not feeling well at all and decided to start making my way home. I made it the first leg of my bike commute to the train station and then lost it in the bushes there. It was bitterly cold and no one was outside of the station, plus it was the middle of the day with few riders, so there were no witnesses that I am aware of. Took a seat in a car with a toilet in case my stomach wanted to try and empty its contents some more. My wife was kind enough to meet me at the station and give me a ride home. I could have gutted it out and rode the remaining 10 miles home, but I probably would have need to stop along the side of the road one or more times.

Never had any bad luck riding or commuting. However a few months ago I was building up my running miles and needed to do my long run in the morning vs the evening due to a commitment later in the day and travel later in the week. Well, I was not feeling great at the start of the run and was hoping to improve after a quick warm up. I improved after the short 2 mile loop around the block and decided to do the remaining 8 miles as a loop around a park not far away. I made it to the park when it started. I had to stop in my tracks, my skin instantly went cold, my body had instant sweat. I look around and realize nothing is open at 5:30 am in downtown Atlanta and I was left to my primal instincts. I found shelter in a small wooded area and let nature take over. It was a very long walk home. Needless to say I was sick for 2 days, travel was cancled.
