Correlation does not equal causation.

not sure I would arrive at that one.

here's a better example of using that scientific meme as a fallacy:

observation: this thread revealed useful information
observation: pcad posted in this thread
conclusion: pcad must be responsible for the useful information

(leaving out the important variable = pcad posts in EVERY thread)

correlation does not imply causation

Yeah, I didn't think it was quite right, but I wanted to say it.

It was enough for me to try to keep up with the couple that were in front of me, and to not get caught by the people behind. I'm just not focused enough to push myself in any way when I ride by myself.

I didn't actually look at my average w/kg, since I've only really focused on the watts, my HR, and cadence. My average watts always come out to embarrassingly low. (I suck at this sport, but that's the point of taking the class, it can only get better.) Most of the men in the group today were around 170-185. The women were from 86-140. I was in the middle-ish.

I'm still trying to figure out how I stay in zone 5 for my HR for 90 minutes though. (Based on my AT test zones) I know I asked about this before, and was told it was probably doing some good, but I keep getting into arguments with the Mr. about him wanting me to be in zone 2/3. Eff me, I'm slow as it is, to get my heart rate that low I have to be barely moving.
We all suck at this sport.

I think my average watts for 90 minutes was like 165. One of my buddies was close to 200 but he weighs a lot more than me (I am only 144 pounds) so his average w/kg was lower.

It sounds like the deal you describe is reasonable. I would even consider springing for the (overpriced) classes in my area but I live in metro philly and our winters are really not that harsh, generally even if there is a snow it is cleared within a few days so I just ride outside. Today I did 45 miles and the temp was about 38 degrees and it was fine.

Agree.

My non-expert impression: When I was handwringing at the LBS trying to chose between Rival and Force, I could feel a slight difference between the three. It's like there's more play in the lever before actuation. I didn't spend as much time messing with Red, but we also bought the Mr.'s F3 (with Red Shifters and RD) at the same time, and I rode it while my bike was apart to swap the group. Certainly not enough of a difference to me to pay twice as much, but the LBS gave us the Force group for only $100 more than the Rival group, so that seemed worth it.

I'm having a hard time identifying the specific fallacy in this one.

If we assume that "beautiful Scott addict" = "good taste" then the fallacy is:

Affirming The Consequent:
logic reversal. A correct statement of the form "if P then Q" gets turned into "Q therefore P".

not really and certainly not with the general following that yours do.

one exception is the oxford vs cambridge boat race that has become a national event.

I wonder if the US is the only country that puts a name on athletic teams:

instead of calling a baseball team 'New York', they are called the "Yankees", or the "Tigers" instead of Detroit. This is a mild example that gets rabid once you cross into college sports with all the mascots.

Whereas in the UK you have football teams that simply go by their town or area: i.e. Manchester United, Liverpool, Stoke etc

could it be that your teams have more likelihood of moving? ours tend to be geographical and that's that.

colleges are not likely to move.

The history is strange though. the first ever professional baseball team was called the Cincinatti Red Stockings, but back then there were sports contest between colleges and I don't think there was naming. Yale would play Harvard etc.

and it is a rare team not named after a geographical area.
