I have mixed feelings about P90x. I question its sustainability, especially if one is not otherwise active. (not an issue for a runner I suppose) I know people who have used it to "get in shape" and not long after they stopped, reverted back to how they were before. (not necessarily overweight or unfit)

so what is the difference between pilates and yoga? which is better for lower back pain and weak core?

are both as gay as each other? maybe ruokie would be the best to know.

disclaimer: not that there is anything wrong with that.

I'm working from home today. Ever since my wife left the dog has been sitting at attention staring out the front window. That is where he is when I get home every night.

I wonder if he does this all day.

I'm not a fan of P90X. The plyo day isn't truely plyo, it's cardio based on plyo. That seems like a great way to injure your feet/lower legs with no real benefits over something like running. The weight days have too many isolation exercises and are overly focused on the vanity muscles. The abs stuff is, again, more vanity than practical and has mostly feel the burn exercises rather than effective core exercises. Core synergistics was pretty good though.

Jen, what's wrong with yoga. I like yoga.

Most so called Pilates concentrates almost entirely on the core. A lot of core stabilization classes call themselves Pilates, whereas real pilates works the entire body with weird machines (one is called the Iron Maiden)

Most Yoga classes also work on breathing, flexibiltiy, balance, and relaxation in addition to core stabilization. Many poses also work on upper body endurance.

Incorrect. The classes around here have far more guys in the yoga classes than in the pilates classes (but the yoga is still probably 8:1 F:M)

I have done pilates variants for close to 15 years and find it incredibly boring. The skills used in yoga seem to help more in day to day life (the breathing particularly). I manage my stress much better since I started yoga. My balance has gotten better, as has my bike handling.

They both will help your back, and both "are pretty gay"

I know an awful lot of people who have done P90X for 1-2 months and then stop. Seriously, how do we all like riding rollers/trainer? It is just like the Jane Fonda workouts. How many people kept them up? Working out in front of the TV will always result in poor long term compliance even if people see results. Exercise was meant to be fun.

I'm actually glad they lost tonight, because it's almost impossible to beat somebody 3x in one season.

We'll see who's the man in the match game.

woah. wens does yoga and pilates. that's manly enough for me. competitive swimmers are plenty manly compared to weedy cyclists.

but then again, ruokie is a fan of both too. oh the agonising.
